We did similar avionics in a 172, and the cost was $28k. Dual G5, new Garmin gps etc etc.
granted, no autopilot. But this was in 2024.
So $110k sounds very high....
For $120k, you can definitely do better, and not be stuck with an o-300

Re: Seeking advice on buying a Cessna 172
Whenever I've been considering the 0-300 every mechanic I know has simply said, don't. There's a reason the lycoming equipped 172 sell for considerably more. $30k sounds unrealistic. I've seen o-200 overhauls cost considerably more than that recently. With one cylinder much worse than the others tha...

No you wouldn't. It's a career that deserves to be highly paid due to the difficulty and skills it requires. Anybody saying otherwise is trying to undermine pilots for corporate or personal reasons. Nope. you're misunderstanding me. I'm retired from one career, I now will only work for something th...

Re: Has anyone else quit right before their CPL Test?
I’ve spent about $120,000 so far if you include gas, rental insurance, headsets etc. are cases of people leaving and coming back common? I see a lot of stories of people happily slogging out tough times and making it through but not that many of people giving up and feeling happily ever after I'd g...

Re: Has anyone else quit right before their CPL Test?
I would never become commercial pilot unless I was accepted to a subsidized college program where you only pay regular college tuition. Why? I spent $42k getting cpl and multi IFR. I made that back within 5 months of my first flying job. I now make about $1500 a day. And I'm not talking 30 years ag...

Re: Buying a N registered plane and importing?
I know a lot do, most of the planes I fly professionally are N registered and here in Canada.PostmasterGeneral wrote: ↑Fri Mar 07, 2025 9:05 pm Are you even allowed to do that on a permanent basis?
I guess worst case just fly it south every 6 months or whatever.

Re: Buying a N registered plane and importing?
It's from a friend. So yes, it's a smoking deal that wouldn't be on the open market. Excellent. So fly it to Canada, start the import and find out what it's going to cost you. If it's reasonable buy, if not bring it back to your friend. You need to seriously consider what other posters have written...

Re: Buying a N registered plane and importing?
It goes something like this: - fly the plane into Canada, either under its N reg or a temp Canadian registration - whichever airport you picked for your import: your plane is now a paperweight until cleared for inspection by a specific type of government AME, I believe they are called DARs but I mi...

Re: Tsb report out on 2023 piper saratoga fatal crash
I know this area well. 100 of my 300 hours are mountain time. I would never have gone past Ghost Lake with that weather. I hope I would have stayed on the ground to begin with. So sad, so unnecessary. CLF I was at the airport that night doing some Sim work and then planning to go fly. The weather w...

Re: Easiest/cheapest c172 IFR upgrade?
Easiest and cheapest for legal KNS80 and a CDI. But I wouldn't recommend that even if you can find one. What would make more sense is likely a kx155 or similar nav/com with a separate cdi. I dont know if there is a way to get it to talk to the G5 without separate more expensive equipement and even ...

Easiest/cheapest c172 IFR upgrade?
I have a 172 with Garmin GPS 175 and dual G5, plus two new garmin com only radios, and a newer garmin transponder with ADSB out. I'd like to make it IFR legal, not to fly real IMC, more just to file IFR on VFR days for better routing and surveillance. So right now it can do IFR approaches etc perfec...

Re: IR 6/6/6 currency in non IFR rated plane?
You're on the right track! Here's a reply that addresses your IFR training options: Absolutely, practicing IFR approaches in VMC is a great way to hone your skills. Here's the breakdown: Yes, requesting practice approaches in VMC is common. Many towers and TRACONs can accommodate these requests if ...

Re: IR 6/6/6 currency in non IFR rated plane?
Yes, you can do that. It might be worth having a second pilot onboard with you though just as a second set of eyes outside. Because since you are VFR, the controller isn't required to provide you with traffic or obstacle separation. So if you're just looking inside at your instruments during most o...

IR 6/6/6 currency in non IFR rated plane?
Where I fly you can call terminal and request IFR training slots, and go shoot some approaches, in VMC. I have a 172, which has sufficient nav equipment to do IFR approaches, GPS175 and dual Garmin G5, but it isn't technically IFR legal as it does not have a back up nav system. We are considering ad...

Re: IR currency group 1 multi
Thank you both, that was my understanding too, but not the line many of the local instructors held when explaining it. I also felt they were interpreting it incorrectly, but as I was doing my group 1 IFR in a multi it didn't really matter. But now for maintaining currency it does as I'm not flying a...
