Re: If you have thought about ATC, but the no income stopped you
I'm a licenced controller who went through under the NCTI system, but would not have been able to train under the new regional system with now pay and having to cover my own living costs for the first 6 months (VFR).

Re: Ultralight Over YVR
Please, don't say your transponder code on initial contact. At this point it is useless information and takes up valuable air time. If you are not already correlated (showing an ident in your data tag) we will find out own way to identify you (squawk ident, or assign a code). First call should be th...

Re: Nav Canada
Old Dog: What year did you write and implement this course you speak of? Thinks have changed in the last half century. Our MANOPS is close to a thousand pages thick, not to mention all the other information we are required to know. Also the last time I checked technology has improved to the point wh...

Re: Initial Callups and Readbacks
I'm sure everyone is aware, but mind gets busy and mind forgets sometimes. Adding the "readback" at the end doesn't take 2 seconds and I'm sure in the end it would save a lot of airtime. I doubt it would save that much airtime in the end, and over time it would become redundant and begin to lose it...

Re: Initial Callups and Readbacks
What about controllers add "Read Back" at the end of their transmission when they want/require a readback? Shouldn't really be necessary for normal readbacks. If you're IFR you should know that you have to readback a clearance, and VFR pilots are only required to readback a hold, or hold short. I d...

Re: Initial Callups and Readbacks
And someone mentioned that old timers were taught to include the "C" prefix back in the dark ages but believe me that is a load of bull. I've been flying since 02 July 1952 and in ATC from Oct 1953 until finally firing the company in Feb 2003. So I think that I have a bit of knowledge on the subjec...

Re: Initial Callups and Readbacks
I would have no problem with "on the slide westbound" as that is no different than "rolling runway two seven". However, using phraselogy like Five point Five and Fifty Five Hundred leaves more opportunity for things to be misheard, and therefore misunderstood especially if there is a congested frequ...

Re: Initial Callups and Readbacks
I completely agree with 5x5, partial readbacks don't exactly leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling afterwards, and if I have to chase down a proper readback on every clearance I issue i'm not going to have time to do much else. Another pet peeve that has already been mentioned "Charlie Golf ......", d...

Re: crossing the georgia straight
If you depart YYJ or YVR call the YVR code number in advance and they will assign you a transponder code. If you depart any NAVCANADA site ie.(YXX,YPK,YNJ,ZBB,YHC,YBL,YWH) you will be issued a code prior to departure, and this code will take you all the way to your destination (including thru termin...

Re: GTA Area - wanna fly me to Harrisburg on Friday?
I'm speechless. Other than good on you Sulako for making the offer in the first place. A crossborder trip for a CPL timebuilder is worth way more than another 10 hours in the circuit at their home airport. If this thread represents the state of aviation in Canada, then I guess the pieces are startin...

Re: Professionalism
If its light traffic I have no problem with some humour on the frequency, provided it's tastefull. Always remember if you take life too seriously you won't get out alive. If the frequency is busy park the jokes, and keep the communications short and sweet. My favorite is "we'll pedal harder" after t...

Re: IFR Pay Scale
If you're in an IFR unit you'll become an ATC-6 upon checkout, and start at the first pay increment. Each year on the anniversery of your checkout date you'll move up one level on the scale until you max out at 11 years. In addition to your salary you'll also recieve an ATC Premium which varies from...

Re: Recruiting process for ATC
Aviation1, I will apologize in advance for being blunt. I don't know a lot about the new testing system (I applied under the old) but if you failed the old aptitude test and didn't score well enough on the new test to warrant an interview it might be that you don't have the aptitude considered neces...

Re: Globe&Mail: Lives Could Have Already Been Saved
I understand that changing the rules for SVFR will not make any difference for those wishing to push weather at uncontrolled airports. It will prevent some from departing controlled airports and would make a difference in that respect. No amount of rule changes will stop some people from pushing wea...

Re: Globe&Mail: Lives Could Have Already Been Saved
I think it is time to look at banning SVFR for departures period. If this was the case this accident would never have happened and we wouldn't be having this conversation. On too many occasions I have been a spectator watching aircraft takeoff at bare minimum SVFR and flying into what is obviously w...

The first instructor that taught me on a retractable made me include "gear down and locked" with the landing clearance/final call. However, when doing my multi rating it was just another bad habit that my college educated instructor had to break.

Re: Question on the June 16 YYZ IFR course
Can't comment on the people in the specialty cause I've never worked there, and my comments aren't specific to YZ terminal. Sending ab initio trainees to the busiest and most complex specialties and towers still perplexes me. All of the busiest units in the country have a lousy checkout rate for ab ...
