Could also have been an exchange crew member from south of the border where that same sight picture would indeed be a P3.

Not sayin' that you'd want to do this on a certified A/C but for the OM crowd, there's always this solution:

I wonder how well known that is....

Re: Installing seat belts on pre-78 SE aircraft

Good, solid write up PilotDAR! Thanks for your regular contributions to this forum. OK, PilotDAR's writeup reminded me of something that I think is overlooked in GA. While we're on the subject of safety belts, it's worth having a think about the age of the belts you're depending on to save your life...

Re: Skylease Cargo 747 Runway Overrun YHZ Nov 7, 2018

It would be interesting to know what their landing weight was. SNIP! I heard/read somewhere (local media?), that the timeline for getting the A/C removed depended on offloading the significant fuel load. They went on to say that they fueled in Chicago and had enough endurance for the next leg to An...

All I could see in the original photos was the front of the plane. Must have been an exciting ride for the lobsters
Wouldn't they be picking up lobsters in Halifax, not delivering them?
Yup, the importer has an office at YHZ.

Re: 406 in conjunction with Spot

If the enbedded ELT GPS were powered by A/C power Maybe there’s one that is. Or maybe it’s not permitted by the design criteria. I don’t think the absence of such a feature is because of a lack of intelligence on the part of system designers.        :!: ...

Re: 406 in conjunction with Spot

My comment was to say that if there was a GPS receiver embedded in your ELT then having it active while the aircraft was in operation would be intelligent. So, anyone out there know if this is the case I’m sorry, I thought I answered that: because having any circuit in the ELT active while the airc...

Re: 406 in conjunction with Spot

Not to be difficult but to nitpick just a little bit, the spec. allows for a minimum of 50 seconds warm-up for the first message to be transmitted. It has to do with the heated crystal oscillator in the transmitter coming up to temp and on frequency so you need to push the button about a minute bef...

Re: 406 in conjunction with Spot

but in the 30 seconds preceding the crash you can activate the ELT and have a signal go out while it's still good. One needs to temper one's expectations with how well this will work. Unless your ELT is connected to an approved GPS source it will take at least a few minutes to get a position. A who...

Re: 406 in conjunction with Spot

Regarding the antenna - even a broken off antenna still acts as a poor transmitter. An ideal 1/4 wave dipole on 406 MHz would be about 18cm long, but even a short wire antenna that's a couple cm will transmit, just with a weaker signal. See: key fobs operating on 433 MHz. The problem is that it's s...

Re: 406 in conjunction with Spot

Something to keep in mind with the SPOT is that the tracking service is not standard - it is an option you have to pay extra for. With just the standard SPOT service a message is only sent when a user pushes a button on the device This statement is not correct, the basic service includes tracking. ...

Re: What is the deal with all the French on the radio?

One thing that's confusing right away is that thousand (Mille) and Miles (Milles) sound awfully similar. So 3 miles south at 2000' would be "trois milles au sud a deux mille pieds"? My personal Quebecois translator tells me that you pronounce them the same and you know by context which is meant! D 8)

Re: What is the deal with all the French on the radio?

To keep this discussion productive, does anyone have a link to a phraseology guide in French? There's a chance I may fly through Quebec some day and I'd like to pick up the basic phrases. I suppose I could just translate the English phrases but I'm not sure if it would be exactly what's used. Also,...

Armchair.
