Re: Canada's C-17's . . . what do they do??
The use of contracted Russian-type airlift has been going on for years, almost as long as Canada has been in the 'stan and long before the arrival of the C-17. It has also been a long time since the contracted airlift providers were trusted to haul personnel.

Re: Laser beam hits WestJet pilot in the eye on Calgary takeoff
Common sense AND safety would dictate that you land at the nearest suitable airport in the event of a crew member incapacitaion. I guess the difference for me is safety first. Common sense second. The safety of the people onboard will always come before anything else. That's the worst case of armch...

Re: CIAS AirShow
None whatsoever, save for spectator in years past. I have however brought aircraft to the airshows I mentioned, mostly because of glowing peer reviews.

Re: CIAS AirShow
Airshows draw the military exhibitors (at least the ones who have the option of showing up or not) by how well they are treated when they get there. I suspect the T.O. airshow doesn't do a very good job of this, and word gets around! The Abbotsford airshow after-hours functions are legendary, same w...

Re: CDN fighter jets temporarily plug hole in U.S. air defence
Ahramin-- It's not that Canada can't deploy it's CF-18's to Afghanistan, we, as a nation choose not to. All members of the coalition have made their contributions, and close air support to the troops is provided by other nations. Canada is currently contributing thousands of hours of Herc intra-thea...

Re: Air Force
Monkey is right- the rule is 120hrs per 30 days max, and the max is often flirted with while deployed..... tactical Herc guys are getting 450-500 hours/year these days, and soon some new airframes!!!!

Regarding your question on deployments- thankfully they are a very small part of a military pilot's career.... most of the time it is training, and training and training some more, both airborne and ground based. Some go a whole career without an operational deployment. Having said that, its a great...

"Correct: military aircraft are not governed by CARs." Wrong! Miltary aircraft and pilots, when in civil airspace and/or at civil airports are expected to follow all civil rules - with some exceptions for some very unique circumstances. They cannot do as they please - for the most part. Those who n...

As a CC130 driver in the CAF, I can honestly tell you it is a fantastic career anda great way to get to the majors (if that's what you want). There is truth to what the other things posters have said about the potential for ending up flying a type you may not have wanted, or posted to a base you may...
