Re: Bank Angle In The Circuit
I am turning downwind with 130 (no typo) degrees of bank. My accelerometer is indicating precisely +1.0 G and the ball is in the center. What is my stall speed? Bonus question: if I stall, which way will the aircraft go? Are you asking which direction will the (vertical component of the) aircraft's...

Re: X/Wind corrections.
Can someone explain why in the 1950's we could get our PPL on tail wheel airplanes on paved runways with a tower and sometimes about ten airplanes in the control zone in thirty hours.....and today the average is about seventy hours for the PPL? Can somebody explain why the light aircraft fatal acci...

Re: CARs that you think should be changed
Is this a trick question?[/quote Well, to be honest, pretty much. The thread was already drifting so I figured it was pretty much on topic I did not actually think when I put the hook in the water, so to speak, the fish would bite so quickly. A few of the guys here had an informal pool going as to ...

Re: What do you teach for the Forced Approach
figure 8 over key point. best way to go. you're always turning toward the field. You're always turning toward the field in a 360 too. The difference is your tangential velocity vector never points to the field in a 360, while they momentarily do in a figure 8. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/...

Re: Energy Management
Your mass plus height is potential energy. Not quite. Gravitational (as opposed to electric or elastic) potential energy is the product of the bodies (aircraft and Earth) masses and Newton's gravitational constant, divided by the distance between them (height): http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia...

Re: Question on night VFR currency (recency?)
So when the skydiver initially jumps out, he's less than 500' from you. Would this not also outlaw tight formation flying? 602.14 (b) in circumstances other than those referred to in paragraph (a), at a distance less than 500 feet from any person, vessel, vehicle or structure. By not explicitly sta...

Re: Use of strobe lights
Same argument could be made against day time running lights in a car, but they are in place for a reason. So using that logic I should not operate any aircraft that does not have a generator or alternator or no beacons or strobes anywhere there may be other pilots because they are limited in their ...

Re: Use of strobe lights
When you're on the ground, your beacon serves that purpose. If your aircraft has no lights and you are operating in day VFR can pilots still recognize an aircraft on the ground even if it has no lights on, or do pilots have trouble seeing something that obvious? Same argument could be made against ...

Re: GA Headsets
I also love the Telex 50Ds, but for long flights, the Bose A20 is much more comfortable, having so little clamping force. This does however mean absolutely poor passive noise reduction, so if your batteries die, killing the ANR, you have to press the headset against your ears hard if you want to mak...

Hey Eric, Great question. You're dad said you were a smart guy- looks like he was right. From my guess, you know the answer, but using a bit of questioning to get some instructors on this forum to figure things out for themselves. Have you got your PPL yet or are you still a SPP? I need a ride in t...

Was your dad in the front seat? Well, the footage at the beginning (take off, spin), taken from the headset mounted camera shows an empty front seat ;) Use your better judgement though and figure that out for yourself! What exactly are you using to attach the Drift to your Telex headset? Just a sta...
