Anyone with any knowledge of coastlines knows that the weather can change very rapidly and in very small areas. A dazzling VFR day can be a total fog a half mile away. I have seen this in numerous places. Pilots on the West coast deal with this every day. Naturally, there are pressures to get the j...

The one thing I have a hard time understanding and hopefully someone can clarify it, is how did the engine end up being torn off the aircraft if it wasn't a catastrophic landing. That being the case, regardless of the condition or age of the floats, they would never have remained intact during such...

It's been hinted at here that west coast operators often operate in "marginal" weather knowing full well that the weather can change (for better or worse) quite quickly. Why is that? The issue of the witness report near the start of the program hasn't been addressed here as yet since I queried abou...

I had a very similar looking windscreen in a fully loaded -2. Analysis post incident revealed a "baby finger" size hole had develpoed on top of a piston, pressurizing the crankcase forcing all the oil out around the prop shaft and subsequently covering the windscreen. Enough power remained for me to...

Pushing limits - yours and your A/C
My last post about Cat's "slam dunk" got me thinking......how many of us actually practice "outside the box"?? ie; Yes, every manual has emergency proceedures for each A/C that I assume everyone is up to speed on. Question is - do we practice stuff that they don't write in manuals?? For example down...

" The Garrett will give you more power for less fuel, a higher initial TBO and instant power when you need it." You forgot to mention instant drag when you need it for a slam dunk. Some will argue the value of the dunk Cat but it is good practice and a sheit load of fun........the immediate power i...

I've held off today as perhaps I take this whole issue a little too close to heart, but then again I don't think that should be possible for anyone. Of all days as I watched the entire service from France, I feel it is a day that should bring us all closer together. Each IS entitled to his or her op...

After a re-read of the thread with lower blood pressure, it is clear "Dash-Ate" & "swede" are the focus of the bleeding heart mentality that draws my ire. Many other great posts in support of our troups and our worthy cause - THANK YOU for that! To Dash-Ate & swede.......well, let's just say that th...

This is a great thread, things come to mind the more a guy reads.... One other that I make habit of is to record all towers and obstructions on my moving map. It's simply a matter of overflying them on good days and punching them in. When flying the mins, it adds great peace of mind allowing focus o...

Float drivers: Follow the water like it's God, especially on TO, landing and low altitude scuddy days. There is usually NO need to drag out over dry ground in most areas. Always assume that the wonderful noise upfront is going silent on you some day and ask yourself - "what now"?? I don't wish it bu...
