I'm in the Waterloo program now. Did you go to the open house in March?

Re: Funding flight training

Sorry I think I've worded what I said incorrectly. There is a 6 year contract where you're supposed to fly for Cathay after training. I meant to say there's no bond (or long term contract where you're binded by contract to work for many many years getting paid a low wage)...since I think I've heard ...

Re: Funding flight training

oops maybe I should answer directly to the specific question in your initial post too. Successful applicants are sent to Adelaide, Australia for 60 weeks of training (all expenses paid with a weekly/monthly allowance too I believe...). After acquiring all your licenses in Australia, you return to Ho...

Re: Funding flight training

Cathay's program used to be only open to Hong Kong residents but that has been changed. They accept applications from anyone and you can choose the preferred interview location (Hong Kong preferably I assume). I don't think there is a long-term contract with the Cathay program and I don't think you'...

Re: Admission Averages: Flight Programs

I think Grade 11 marks can also help (this would be my guess when I looked at my case...). I was accepted into Sault and Confederation early on with only a high 70s average for the first semester with all 12U courses...but my Grade 11 marks were in the mid 80s. For Seneca...I THINK you HAVE to do th...

Re: Admission Averages: Flight Programs

Confed, low 70s should do it. Not anymore, I was just shy of getting accepted for Sept 2008 and I was in the 80's I think this also depends on the courses you've taken. I had all Grade 12U courses including two 12U math courses and 12U physics and I was accepted into Confederation quite early only ...

Re: Where are Canadian students going for flight training?

things are now admittedly a bit slow I'm amazed that anyone, anywhere is still taking pilot training, under the current economic conditions. There are not many jobs now that's true but like you said it's a cycle and things are going to change sooner or later, the way I see it is get your license an...

Re: Colleges In Ontario

Hours matter most no matter what. Then later on in your career (say if you want to apply to Air Canada) then a degree or diploma would be a good asset to have. Until then, no one would really care whether you have a degree or diploma as long as you have the hours and experience. But hey post-seconda...

Re: Colleges In Ontario

I think you should talk to your parents about it if they're the ones paying for your tuition, flight training costs, travelling home on weekends (if for example you choose Conestoga), etc. Also ask yourself whether what you want. Do you want a college diploma and your licenses? A certificate and you...

Re: Colleges In Ontario

I agree with mcconnell14. Sounds like they're just after your money. I applied to their program last year but didn't go there. Their website is not informative at all and the details of the program were basically a total mystery. I thought if I apply and get in, they would start giving me the detail...

Re: University Degrees

I'm in a university aviation program myself and I do agree that it is a more expensive option. I still chose the university+aviation path because I wanted to fly and my family (including myself) thinks I should get a degree. Now I wouldn't say university education is useless if all you want to do is...

Don't worry too much if you haven't received Western's acceptance. My marks were just a few percent over their "80% requirement" and I found out last year at around late April I think. Good luck!

Re: My Aviation Goals

I was making the same decisions about this time last year and in the end, I chose Science and Aviation at Waterloo. I actually wanted to go to western and I even accepted their offer but I changed my mind in the end. Doing a university aviation program costs a lot of money and the flight training co...

Seneca is subsidised too? why did i think it wasn't? Correct me if i'm wrong, but is it a 4 year program now? including MIFR? Yes it's a 4 year program including MIFR. At the end of 4 years you get what's called a Bachelor of Applied Technology degree from Seneca. An Ontario college degree like thi...

Re: Confederation Sept 2008

I believe it is a conditional offer. I haven't received information from confederation yet. I only found out at the ontario colleges website. But Sault college did send me a package and it says "final acceptance will be granted upon successful completion of the following program requirements: O.S.S....

Re: Confederation Sept 2008

None of my grade 12 marks were available to them when I got the offer. I think they saw the courses I am taking this year (12U physics, chemistry, earth and space, advanced functions, calculus and vectors) and looked at my grade 11 average which was around 78-80%.

Waterloo U's aviation program

How useful is a science/geography-aviation degree? Are there a lot of flying jobs where you need science/geography knowledge? And would Western's program be more useful? Thanks in advance!

I know 1000 hours is minimum requirement but do they really consider people with just over 1000 hours? What would be a more reasonable number of hours to apply at? 1500? 2000? Thanks in advance.

You can also consider going to the University of Western Ontario. They have a commercial aviation management program and you can choose the flight training option. You get your pilot qualifications and you also get a Bachelor of Administrative and Commercial Studies degree in commercial aviation man...
