Re: Advice on route across Northern Canada in late July
I fly a bo out of YZF and been up to Inuvik and Tuk a couple of times. From Alaska you are likely well equiped and all set. Yes airports are sparce but generally July is the best time of year to go. Both my trips have been August which has meant a few dreary days in Inuvik but have the time to spare...

Re: Gotta ask
Anyone else catch the irony in Mulcair's Aerospace announcement this morning; promoting a plan to boast Canadian aerospace manufacturing jobs, while posing in front of a French manufactured campaign plane?

Re: One year of being an owner
Great post IDP. Love your take on your experience which, looking at others comments as well as my own, suggest that we are all in a similar boat. Entering year #4 for me. Slightly different background (former commercial pilot with close to 1500 VFR in various singles and twin turbos) but the experie...

Re: IFR Validity Change - No more checkrides
I wonder what this means to those (like myself) whose license has lapsed for more than 2 years? IE as far as I understand, under the old rules, I would need to rewrite the INRAT and then take the flight test.
Because I 'previously held' an IFR, can I just do the flight test now?

Re: Buying a plane ?
I'm certainly not a veteran when it comes to buying planes, but from what I've heard and experienced there's really no such thing as a deal when it comes to buying a plane. A lot has to do with what you want and what you're willing to pay. A 10K Cherokee might be a 'good deal' for the price but by y...

IFR Renewel question - More than 2 years lapse
Lets be honest; I know the answers are out there, and I have done some research into CARs, but I figure someone in the masses has a clearer interpretation of the regs and will be able to help out or at least clarify. My IFR expired over 2 years ago. I fully understand that I need to right the INRAT ...

Re: Association of professional aircraft pilots of Canada
This came up when the College held an info session here in Abbotsford. The catch is that the College isn't interested in taking on licensing. Any group that wants to take on licensing for CPL/ATPL will also have to take on PPL, Rec licenses, etc... It'll be an all-or-nothing arrangementm or it won'...

Re: Association of professional aircraft pilots of Canada
Not that it's in the realm of reasonable or even practical possibility but what about a self regulated Professional Organization that is responsible for not only advocacy but ethics, codes of conduct and licensing/membership. I'm sure it's been debated on here before but the CPAs (née CGA, CMA or CA...

+1. Would like to know if there was someone local.
I know that Uppervalley in Chilliwack does some painting. I think they might be the closest.

Trip Advice Needed: YYC to VGT (North Las Vegas)
Just wanted to see if anyone had any insight in doing a VFR trip from YYC to Vegas in mid march? I know how unpredictable the wx can be that time of year in Southern Alberta, but my South Side flying has been limited to a Oshkosh trip a couple of summers ago. Just wondering if anyone has any advice ...

Re: Give your head a shake!!!
I was in the market 12 months ago and chose not to go the USA route. Negotiated with one seller in canada who had his posted for about 25k over market. Found another model of the same type and negotiated the seller down for 35 k less then the previous. The plane took me to Oshkosh and all around the...

Got my tickets and am planning to fly down with my father and stay on the weekend package in my S35. Its my first OSH and we are getting really excited. I hope to make it an annual track from Yellowknife which should be interesting. Wish I could bring the little one (will be 7 months old) but perhap...

Mosquito NETS!!!!!!!! Depending on what you're calling north, it might be a necessity that you wouldn't want to be without. Went to a few exploration camps last summer in NU and WOW, never EVER though they could be that bad! Was wishing I had the foresight the twitter guys had with the nets under th...

Government, at least thats what I did. Sure its not the money of the rigs but theres a pension and after 20 years I get 9 weeks holidays. Sure I do miss some of the 17 hr days up in the arctic, tenting engines and loading drills, but getting to put my kid to bed every night quickly makes it all come...

Re: Seasonal Pilots - Do you get Overtime & Benefits?
First I want to say that I am not an advocate of the overtime averaging system. I think its a crock but after questioning it myself I discovered that there are some sneaky ways for the employer to justify their actions. I agree with Jetboy and feel the way that some operators apply the averaging sys...

Re: Seasonal Pilots - Do you get Overtime & Benefits?
With regards to the Overtime question, the entire Aviation Industry is governed by the employment standards and labour code of Canada. In this legislation it is dicted that an employee who works over 8 hours a day or 40 hours per week be compensated for their time at 1.5 times of regular pay. There ...

Re: Career Change or Just for Fun?
Keep the job. I just recently got out. After 6 years I stopped flying. I'd worked for a couple bush/charter operators, accumulated 1600 hrs of time, was my exams away from an ATPL and had a good run across the prairies, the north and east coast. My wife got pregnant, so having a family, being a dad ...
