Re: Engine oil analysis

Oil analysis can be a valuable tool to keep a track of the wear on your engine. It should be done regularly, so as to establish a trend, plus if you are operating commercially and want to get onto an "on condition" status, then it is mandatory. The first analysis reading right after an overhaul is g...

Re: RII on props

From ANC010. For the purposes of this notice"flight and engine controls" includes all controls by which the propulsive force or flight path of an aircraft can be altered, and includes both primary and secondary controls. In my opinion, a propeller would be considered a "propulsive force". In the cas...

Re: Interior Options for c172

Probably the first question to ask yourself is "do I just need a simple replacement of what was installed when new, because they are now cracked and falling apart, or something that will stand a bit more abuse (kicking) and will outlast the owner?". The original plastics on the 172 were simple and l...

Re: Leaky fuel tank? Cessna 180H

The leak will show up at the sump drain because it runs from the top of the tank and drips into the fuel cell cavity and out the open hole where the drain is. Typically the leak is when the tank is full because of two reasons. Either the tank is cracked around the filler neck or the leak is from the...

Re: Continental 0-470K

o-470K 400 SMOH on a Cessna 180H? 1 quart every 15 hours good? That's absolutely fine. A couple of things. First, those big Continental engines do go through oil. It's what keeps the cylinders lubed. Two, change the oil and filter at 50 hours, if you have a full flow oil filter kit installed. If not...

Re: gunk and algae on floats

tazin river, probably a good coat of marine wax would help. You should get in the habit of cleaning the floats off in the fall when the aircraft is removed from the water, then coat them down with a protectant. The slime that sticks to them can be corrosive to the floats, plus it seems to be easier ...

Re: Check that Seat is Properly Latched

Folks, this is why you have to have AD 2011-10-09 performed on your older Cessna every annual inspection or 100 hours. Make sure to have your AME carry it out. There is more to the inspection than just checking the holes on the rails.

Re: Source for plastic Cessna panel overlays

Try the next serial # range in Plane Plastics catalogue. The 172 "M" runs several years. The panel cover is sort of generic, you will have to cut out areas particular to what is installed on your instrument panel and/or the means for attaching it. Some covers will have standoffs that you attach velc...

Re: Maintenaince Costs For Cessna 172s

You should expect to pay for 25-30 hours of labour plus parts for an annual inspection if it is the first time an AME or AMO is looking at it. (add 3-5 hours to create an AD compliance report if one doesn't exist) The hourly rate varies from one shop to the next, so the total labour cost is variable...

Re: Weight and Balance amendment requirements

But if the work is done at an AMO they are required to update the W&B if the airplane is commercial or private. Absolutely, however not all private owners choose to get their maintenance done at an AMO because of...you guessed it, the extra rate per hour that is charged. And the extra rate that is ...

Re: Weight and Balance amendment requirements

How is it any different for commercially registered aircraft compared to privately registered aircraft? Can you cite any regulatory difference? Its not. I apologize for a misleading statement. The difference is that a lot of private aircraft owners would not bother because of the expense involved a...

Re: Weight and Balance amendment requirements

If you make a change to the weight or C of G to an aircraft, a new w&b amendment needs to be done, regardless of how much weight. As the owner of an aircraft, it is in your interests to keep an accurate record of the w & b. If you do not have an accurate record of amendments tracing back to the repo...

Re: Continental O-470K, loosing compression on number 4 cylinder

Am I correct to assume that a good honing and ring replacement should remedy the low compression? That would be so much easier. It is quite possible that will remedy your compression, but don't mistake less expensive for being"so much easier". It still takes just as much work to remove the cylinder...

Re: compression check in the 60's

As per the Service Bulletin that "ahramin" attached is the correct method to perform the test. Anything else is not going to give you accurate results. Too many people get hung up on the compression readings of their engine. Remember, it is a number that changes every time you perform it. The readin...
