Re: YYZ and "Close up the approach"

Funny thing. Working a midnight shift and I tend to offer everyone to close the approach when there is no traffic as it cuts my workload and presumably the pilots as well. It seems that the Airbus, 737 and Embraers all recognize the FACF and DTW as flyby waypoints and will actually anticipate the tu...

Re: How do you know which SID, STAR, Runway you gonna get??

CYYZ airport's capacity is increased when running parallell ops on the east west runways. North south ops normally only happen when the crosswinds are too strong to permit legal operations on the 24s/06s. The reason the 33s and 15s aren't used is strictly due to flow rate. A late runway change (05 t...

Re: If you have thought about ATC, but the no income stopped

Only the generic portion of the course (14 weeks) was recognized. HRDC now recognizes sector specific training. I would expect that the length of the 2 combined now qualifies as full-time studies.

Re: VFR Salaries

As for your age don't sweat it. I was the oldest candidate in my class. I'm one of 3 checkouts from a class of 12. I got my license Toronto terminal in November 2009 and I turn 38 this year.

Re: If you have thought about ATC, but the no income stopped

They sent me some retroactive slips so I can apply for an adjustment on my 2008 and 2009 return. I'm sure the VFR is covered too at least in YYZ as it's the same school.

Re: If you have thought about ATC, but the no income stopped

HRDC just threw trainees a bone this month. IFR training is now officially recognized as a post-secondary education. This means new applicants SHOULD have access to student loans and lines of credits. Also you'll be eligible for tax breaks that apply to other students. Might soften the financial blo...

All I will say is that commitment will get you to the START of simulator. Unfortunately you'll have invested 5-6 moths before the intangibles come into play.

I've been in OJT since March and it has it's ups and downs but for the most part it's going really well. It's very challenging but also very satisfying.

Re: Unpaid initial training: strategies?

IFR training for me was 10 months unpaid. I got a student line of credit from TD and was able to withdraw 10k from my RRSP under the lifelong learning plan. Good luck.

There are cue card programs you can install but you can buy many more paper cards and ink if you sell it.

Re: New training setup questions

I'm currently in specialty training at YYZ. The school is in the same building as Toronto ACC. The first 3 months of training (Generic IFR) we were on a Mon-Fri schedule 7am-3pm. Two of the 10 people in our generic class held part-time jobs. Specialty training schedule is a little less rigid and is ...

Our course started June 16th and there is a course behind us that just started October 6th. No rumors from legitimate sources at this time. I'll update if I hear anything.

World History as I remember

There was one guy in our course who was a history major. I don't think any of us did overly well aside from him.

Re: Recruiting process for ATC

I'm currently enrolled in IFR training at YYZ. I was accepted under the SHL process and wrote the NAVCanada version of the aptitude testing as a guinea pig if you will. The new aptitude test is very different from the SHL aptitude test. We didn't receive results for either test. The NavCanada test d...

I started training in June and am currently halfway through the Generic IFR course. I spent alot of time on the ITA CD and I can't say it hurt me. There is a test on the material the first week of training. If you have made a reasonable effort to review the material you should have no trouble passin...

Re: Materials

I got the ITA CD around mid-March and I begin training mid-June. The guidelines say approx. 70 hours of study to complete the course. I found it to be reasonably accurate.

A former ATC friend of mine recommended going through it a few times to get a solid foundation.
