Re: Hunting within the traffic pattern. Do pilots care?
Not to mention the free 'bird control' reducing the possibility of bird strikes at the airport...some airports spend an incredible amount of money on bird-strike prevention!

yes... I too got my private way back when spin training was required... I also remember the days when all of my CPL students got to ex. 13 at the same time (I think the flight was CH11 in our old lesson plans) and so it was a day of climbing up to 11000' and back. (the 11000' is a clue as to the gro...

Re: Quickest/ most efficient way to complete training?
First off -- I admire your enthusiasm. If you were planning medical school than you likely already have an undergraduate degree. From this perspective, go to a flying school - the colleges are great if you want regimented training, but it may not be fast enough. As for the Phenom....one step at a ti...

Re: Use of radio's in flight training
Well, I am sorry for C1's experience. While I (also a Class 1) have been in the business for but a mere 20 years - not nearly the length of time of my esteemed colleagues and friends like Cat and the Col, it has been long enough to know this business requires a thick skin and the ability to have com...

VFR: read back only the A/C ident and any hold short instructions - that's it; IFR: read back everything except for a SID. Of course, my favourite case is when I get called in an airplane with a student and a complicated clearance ('cause the controller knows I'm up there) and the student acknowledg...

Not to get too bogged down in the conversation, I would use PPT for Ground School, but absolutely *NOT* for PGI or preflight's - I agree with my (not likely any longer) 200hr friend. There are amazing and wonderful things you can do with a fresh package of coloured white board markers (if your schoo...

Re: Can you fly IFR at night without a night rating?
My fellow posters are right - a night rating is to fly at night, and an IFR rating is to fly under IFR rules. Perhaps these comments might shed more light (so to speak!): if we (erroneously) are trying to use an IFR rating in place of night - we must remember that IFR flying is flying by a specific ...

A related interesting statistic would be to learn how many of those Class 1 /ATPL's are actively instructing. (For example - how many of those 835 are TC inspectors or PE's? How many of them are doing other things and only occasionally instruct, as that is not their "day job" any more (like myself)?...

Re: Simulators for ab initio training
Don't of course, forget CAR 421.26(4)(b)(i): 5 hrs Instrument time required for a PPL of which only 3hrs can be used (to count) in a SIM. Having said that, I believe the SIMs are an excellent tool for learning all kinds of parts of the license and procedures and can significantly reduce the total nu...

Don't forget about "AIDs": Aviation Induced Divorce Syndrome; it is remarkably common.

It's quite a shame: you and your wife were exactly the kinds of students I enjoyed teaching the most; they were well prepared and keen to try what I was suggesting. I used to work at both small and large flight schools, and now only freelance when the "right" client comes my way. (I am a Class 1/ATP...

Re: When to pull the plug on the Aviation career?
You know, it's funny... I am one of those Class 1 Instructor/ATPL's who did leave the industry for the tenured professor/PhD route. While I will never make what heavy iron Captains will in ca$h, I at least have a job that is business cycle proof, unlike aviation! :) Ultimately, M: do what works for ...
