Re: Metro 3 ( dangerous as they say it is )

I agree. I was reacting to the 'the crew had no chance' comment above. Even without the feathering, they could still have prevented the VMC roll by keeping up the speed an committing to the crash. Not a mentally easy thing to do, but it could have resulted in a possibly better outcome. With the lef...

Re: Metro 3 ( dangerous as they say it is )

The Bearskin YRL incident is an outlier, that crew unfortunately had no change due to the nature of the partial engine failure they experience with enough residual torque and oil pressure to ensure NTS did not kick in. Couldn't they have feathered the affected engine? I get that they might have bee...

Re: Cheapest possible IFR approach at airport

I'm not sure if this document is helpful, but it's produced by the NavCanada Instrument Procedures and Design team to assist with the development of new procedures. I don't think it mentions anything about the cost, but it at least outlines the process: https://www.navcanada.ca/en/p-ipd-102-instrume...

Re: 300NM CPL requirment

It seems this exact discussion was held back in 2012, and there was no clear consensus as to the answer either, but others did their X-country before officially starting their CPL or being "supervised" and it as allowed by Transport. Someone made the interesting point that if this was not allowed, t...

Re: 300NM CPL requirment

There may be an argument to be made that the 300 NM X/C * should * be an experience building exercise, and not formal training. But as the regs are currently written, it's training and therefore requires instructor supervision. How does this explain that Transport accepted my PTR, even though I did...

Re: 300NM CPL requirment

Nope and nope. OP, please read the CARs as mentioned above. It is pretty clear, and would need to be recorded in a PTR. Edit for clarification - everything in CARs 421.30 4(a)(i) can be done whenever/wherever you like and is just recorded in your personal logbook. Everything in CARs 421.30 4(a)(ii)...

Transport has issued an extension (NCR-023-2023) found at https://tc.canada.ca/en/aviation/reference-centre/exemptions-canadian-aviation-regulations-cars. For those who don't want to download the document, here is the relevant portion of the text: "The purpose of this exemption is to adopt temporary...

Re: ATC Failure - Alaska Airlines - Horrible ATC service

As the ICAO terminology states: "The word MAYDAY at the start of communication identifies a distress message indicating that the aircraft is threatened by serious and/or imminent danger and requires immediate assistance." I would say that an explosive decompression that blows the cockpit door open a...

Re: ATC Failure - Alaska Airlines - Horrible ATC service

I believe you guys are making a mountain out of a mole hill. I’ve had to declare an emergency twice with US ATC. Both times the sheer mention of “stoping climb 2XX requesting block XXX declaring an emergency at this time” *Poof* Dedicated controller, gave them POB, fuel and in both cases no DG’s. R...

Re: How was in the past

I started at Jazz in 2014 and had about 3000 hours total time, the majority of that in PC-12 and SA-227 aircraft. My class of 8 all had around the same experience, all had some turbine and most had northern/medevac/charter PIC time. The one exception was one of the 7 was a cadet who came from one of...

Re: TC Medical Deferral - Substance Use

When do you think it would be appropriate to reach out to NavCanada? Do they care about the details of the delay, or is it a matter of either having a certificate or not? Additionally the TC letter states my certificate would be restricted (ie. "with another ATC") for 6 months -- I presume this wou...

Re: TC Medical Deferral - Substance Use

Reaching out to TC & my CAME hasn't clarified much so I was hoping there was somebody else on the forums who has gone through this process before who I could reach out to and ask some questions. Did your CAME originally accept your medical but it was TC that overrode them and deferred it? And if it...

Re: TC Medical Deferral - Substance Use

Hello My cateogry 2 medical was recently deferred due to 'substance use' -- I disclosed previous cannabis use with my CAME which seems to have raised some additional requirements from Transport Canada including drug testing & physician reports. I haven't consumed any cannabis for 7 months now so no...

Re: How long til $100k?

I was a commercial pilot for 13 years (Instructing, 703 and 705) and never cracked $100K. I would have with my next scheduled pay raise had the pandemic not shut things down. I switched to ATC and for the past 3 years have been at a small-medium sized tower and did well over $100K in my first year. ...

Re: DH4 Better do a final door check yourself

I'm glad we came to some sort of understanding. All I'm trying to do is inform what we as ATC's want to hear and/or the terms that are unambiguous so that we can provide the best service possible. As far as I have been concerned, saying Mayday is declaring an emergency…..but I stand to be corrected....

Re: DH4 Better do a final door check yourself

I recommend letting ATC know that you consider yourself to be in an emergency situation after a precautionary engine shutdown in a twin engine airliner(and other twins). This will make it less likely for the airport to have normal traffic ops for your arrival. I can tell you as an ATC, that this mi...

Re: DH4 Better do a final door check yourself

As for the AC event, I forgot to include the part of the report mentions the declaration of an emergency, which has now been corrected. Doubt there was any downside. Re: DH4 Better do a final door check yourself

Some of the potential benefits of declaring an emergency declared are that it is less likely that you will be rushed in by ATC, as sometimes happens with vectors, and it is less likely that they will be squeezing in one more departure while you are on short final. I can tell you as an ATC, that jus...
