Re: Question about minor modifications

If you go to the FAA PMA website and look up the part number, you will find it is listed as a "modification" part. Which is why the stc is there to allow the installation. All the information to do the mod is on Whelen's website.

Re: TSO requirements

They said that when I mentioned that EAA has an STC to allow Dynon non TSO'd EFIS screens in certified a/c ( C172's etc) then they said " well that doesn't mean you can do that in Canada, we don't recognize all FAA STC's" What office is this? Trying to shut you down before even starting. But good o...

Re: TSO requirements

Well at first they said no, it has to be TSO'd as per the original certification then when I said the 140 was certified without a radio then they said it would need a STC for any install. When I brought up the amateur build argument they had no explanation. To end it without actually going on the r...

Re: TSO requirements

[/quote] We're down to an interpretation issue and have to look at case basis. If you have a Cessna 140 and want to put a good radio in but don't want to pay the tso prices, just put in the cheaper one, find someone who also doesn't care to sign it out and be done with it. The regs will also allow y...

Re: TSO requirements

"the equipment must provide the same level of safety as that established by the certification basis of the aircraft.” Yes, I seen that....not that I understand what that actually means. Especially when in regards to a C140 for example that was certified in 1946, there would have been no radio even ...

Re: TSO requirements

No tso required. Kx170B and ICOM 220 aren't tso"ed and they are everywhere. I would discuss this with a proper avionics shop you trust to make sure. Can you elaborate on "they are everywhere"? Given that there's a superficially identical version of both, with TSO (KX175b, A220T) are owners of type-...

Re: Homebuilt airworthiness standards

"it seems solid, and because i'm allowed to say so, I deem it safe! Let's go fly!" Happens all the time! I thought there was something more concrete in the rules that required more due diligence, but I don't know where (or if) there is. Is this what you were thinking of? Not regulatory, but good in...

Re: Open Defects entered at Annual Inspection

This is an excellent discussion on a topic that is so badly taught and badly understood by both pilots and AMEs. Photofly has it right. AMEs only ever certify the work they have performed, except during the import/export process and for a ferry flight. You could also throw in certifying an AME in-tr...

Re: PPL Flight Test Preparation/Studying

I thought it was the strobe system that had to be operational, not the nav lights. Also, something that has always made me wonder. What is the official definition of "flight operations"? Flight time and air time are defined in the CARS, but not flight operations. I think flight operations includes t...

I assume this is a G1000 equipped 172S. The provided screenshot of the equipment list has a description for it. Re: Unserviceable Equipment C172

This is not a run of the mill 172 (CAR 3 certified). This is a FAR 23 certified 172S. It has it's own section in the TCDS. It is certified to different requirements. Is the aircraft airworthy without strobes and a transponder? Better start reading! http://www.airweb.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_L...

Be mindful that the factory hd nose gear was limited up to about the 1967 model year. Plus there is also a Canadian adapplicable to it. There might be stc's out there.

Re: Compans swing on float plane

Most small aircraft manufacturers do not spell out how to do a compass swing. You may see it in large transport category aircraft maintenance manuals. If there's a procedure in the maintenance manual, you need to do whatever it says. Otherwise AC43.13-1B Ch 12., Sec. 3, Para 12-37 lays out the acce...
