For the non - medevac 703 world, has "oncall" been replaced by "stand by"? It does not seem clear in the gazette.

Re: Navcanada discontinuing approaches at under-serviced airports

Atikokan is a dead airport, but the town still relies on it for medevac operations. This would be the same for Manitouwadge, Hearst, Kirkland Lake, Elliot Lake, Gore Bay etc. These airports are likely on the chopping block as well.

Navcanada discontinuing approaches at under-serviced airports

Has anyone in NWO noticed that Atikokan is no longer a published IFR airport? I have heard that Navcanada will be eliminating approaches from airports that it sees as under served. Specifically, if the airport does not have a scheduled service and / or a certified weather station attached to it, it ...

Re: Reps from operators express concern on new duty regs

It is my suspicion that many of the current managers in Canadian aviation are trapped in an outdated paradigm. They simply can not see hazards associated with fatigue. I believe this would be similar to previous generations that accepted driving while intoxicated as being a norm, not wearing seat be...

The TBM pilot was aware he had an issue. He twice asked for a lower altitude, only communicating to ATC that it was an indication issue. ATC denied the requests, unaware of the problem. The pilot should have descended and declared. http://www.flyingmag.com/technique/accidents/doomed-tbm-900-pilot-tw...

Re: Canada Flight Supplement

The CFS airport pages have been added to the Fltplan Go android app, for anyone who uses that program. It provides free access now for the complete US and Canadian plates, lows, highs, and airport info. Its only really lacking the CAP Gen, but that can be downloaded for free from NavCan. Oh, wow......

Re: Ornge Sikorsky Air ambulance accident Northern Ontario

I'm simply speculating here as well. I'm a fixed wing turbine pilot, so my knowledge with helicopters is less than through. How much extra performance would an S-76A have at low altitude and low airspeed should they lose an engine? With four crew members, a medevac interior and IFR fuel required for...

Re: Pilatus PC-12 in Airline Operations

It could have more to do with the 20,000 hour life inspection of the PC-12. From what i've seen it can be a time consuming and expensive process. The life inspection of the PC-12 is due to Pilatus never having designed the machine for high cycles or time. I belive they had built it based on the idea...

Re: PC12 Question

Question: From your sim training on the PC12, what speed would you maintain on a GS to ensure a safe landing if the stove quit? Assuming a fairly "normal" 8-10 knot head wind? Can it be done, or do you maintain a dot above? The engine-out, feathered, clean descent profile of the PC-12 is 4-1, so yo...

Re: PC12 Question

The aircraft itself is quite flexible regarding approach speeds and profiles. Its largely dependant on the company sops and / or pilot. If trying to accommodate traffic or Atc, its pretty easy to maintain 199 ias up to a 4 mile final. However the following are the speeds I typically use: - 200+ up t...

There is an Ops spec for single engine IFR departures from airports below return minima. T/O alternates are required. It feels ridiculous even typing that.

Re: Crash @ North Spirit Lake Ont (4 dead, 1 survivor)

The operators that make it into VFR airports such as north spirit, arm strong and keewaywin on IFR days only helps to reinforce to the community that paying for an approach to be developed would be a waste of funds. Aircraft are able to make it in, why spend money for a service that is not required?

Re: Crash @ North Spirit Lake Ont (4 dead, 1 survivor)

He could have been VFR at some point on the "approach", descended low, ended up over the lake in white out and kept the mark 1 eye ball outside. All it would have taken would be a gradual rate of descent, hence why the plane was not completely totalled on impact.
