Re: Concern about Transport Canada’s Safety Management Syste

Wow, did Snoopy ever hit the nail on the head. With regards to Brint's points, what the operators WANT isn't necessarily relevant, considering that there have always been a proportion of operators at any given time who would thrive under no oversight whatsoever. I agree that the principles of SMS, ...

Re: Concern about Transport Canada’s Safety Management Syste

Without having read the article: If this is about the idea that SMS is replacing proper oversight from TC, then these stats are interesting and worth talking about. Most of the negative press regarding SMS takes this angle. "TC is short staffed, they don't do proper inspections, and SMS is self regu...

Re: Caravan Time

If your company runs it two crew, has provided SOPs and has trained you as an F/O....you are a flight crew member and you should log it.

If you are there to throw bags and "get to fly in cruise" while the pilot fills out the logbook....you are help and you shouldn't log it.

For those who are interested: (a) only factory built, turbine-powered aeroplanes are permitted; It is a grey area in that this line in the standard does not provide a clear interpretation of what the intent was. All certified aircraft are built in factories. All turbines are built in factories. The ...

Re: CBC The National: Report on SMS this Wednesday

That program was horrible reporting. The TW accident was a poor example of SMS not working. Furthermore, the Air Canada Simulator example was silly and obvious. KK7 and The Hammer have it right. I feel that this issue of SMS is separate from the Issue of TC oversight. SMS is a great tool to help a c...

Re: how long is my PPC valid for?

The story I heard was that TC did a "risk assessment" and determined that greater oversight was needed for 703 ops and thus the end of 2 year PPCs. 704 hasn't had as many incidents, so you can still do 2 year 704 PPC. The gotchya is that you can't operate 703 in your 2nd year if you do a 2 year 704 ...

I seems to remember hearing a rumor that the Hot Wings program got lost in some internal politics when AOG folded. Could be wrong and I can't remember details. I turn my phone on in the air so it's ready to go, call on the apron with the engines running and then taxi home once cleared. We usually write the clearance number right in the log book in case there are any questions down the road, the office can just reference the log book instead of tracking me ...

I'm sure there are more than a few old timers there that don't care about company policy and would offer the flight deck. A friend of mine got the jumpseat from Halifax to London a few years back and he wasn't with Air Canada (we was with a Tier 3 Operator, had AC Passes, was in uniform and it was p...

Re: Pax Input (Medevac) - Split from ORNGE thread

This is totally an ego thing and a lame attempt to feel important. "Ya, I sit in an airplane all the time, so I know all about flying, Let's discuss a routine mission to death to all sound important!" Like it has been said, a medevac is no different than any other flight. I did a charter last night,...
