Re: Continental Flt 3407 Crash at Buffalo/Niagra Intr'nal

Seriously?????? :? Seriously. If they weren't 'over their heads', this thread wouldn't exist, and 50 lost souls would still be alive. (And I should edit my original comment and remove "FAA" and replace it with "NTSB" regarding the press release.) I acknowledged that...I'm not disagreeing with you t...

Re: Continental Flt 3407 Crash at Buffalo/Niagra Intr'nal

As for the news released from the FAA, it sounds more and more like the crew simply got in over their heads : Seriously?????? :? I was the first to jump on here in defense of the crew saying wait until initial results come out before you crucify them. But... Losing situational awareness to the poin...

Re: Pilot Decision Making Simulator

the fact is...the military is training to fly themselves...they accept the inherent risks involved, be they crew, etc... If you're flying the F-18...you have an ejection seat to cover your ass.... The ejection seat is not in the plane because you may f-up. There are inherent risks when you fly thes...

Re: Pilot Decision Making Simulator

Not saying you are wrong or right here, but going to play devils advocate for a minute, take with grain of salt!... Military had been taking 200 "whiz kids" for years and putting them in the right seat, center seat, and left seat, in some pretty demanding roles. If done carefully, why couldn't civi...

Re: Pilot Decision Making Simulator

Perhaps you have heard the saying that a pilot licence is really just a licence to learn. This wisdom sums up the fact that there is much more to being a professional pilot than knowing how to handle an airplane. The really challenging aspect of flying professionally is the decision making required...

Re: West Wind Pilots Reinstated

Swordfish... The more I read your posts...the more I start to think that you might be (or if you're not anymore, might have been) a chief pilot that I would have respected and enjoyed flying for. However, I think this statement is a bit misleading... And as for terminating someone, (having been a Ch...

If you end up, nose down off the end of a runway and not a result of your actions, Except for a failure of the brakes and or reverse thrust what other excuse is there for running off the end of a runway. Couldn't resist could you? See it for what it is Cat. I think IFR was simply trying to ma...

Marauder, Samaritan, et al : Actually, I'm not fan of unions also...and I am a pilot. It is my position that they suck money out of you for their own political welfare, under the guise of "assisting" pilots better their conditions. Don't take the stat of 83% and assume all of those pilots fu*ked up. Something just didn't go right for them in the end. Re: Continental Flt 3407 Crash at Buffalo/Niagra Intr'nal

What aircraft in particular are you talking about? In large turbojets you don not have to disengage the autopilot if you are in icing. As a matter of fact Autolands must be completed with autopilots on. Just another pov. I'm not talking about large turbojets. Most props up to heavy turboprop, inclu...

Re: Continental Flt 3407 Crash at Buffalo/Niagra Intr'nal

I didn't mean I don't monitor the autopilot....I meant monitoring the trim....if there isn't a clacker or a wheel to indicate that there is an out of trim situation....there should be some other indicator that shows trim position....but its not part of my regular scan admittedly.... But now that i ...

Re: Continental Flt 3407 Crash at Buffalo/Niagra Intr'nal

Ok, sorry I used the wrong terminology. The point I am making is that the important factor is how much ice is on the leading edge of the wings (and other critical surfaces) at any point in time. That, and that alone, determines whether you are in danger. Even if you have deice boots and they comple...

Re: Continental Flt 3407 Crash at Buffalo/Niagra Intr'nal

Those who fly 704/705 all know about the theoretical possibility of tailplane icing. They also CANNOT do a FLAPLESS landing (as dwj suggests) every time they encounter ice. Why is that? Would it not be better to risk a blown tire than a fatal stall? Large jets do flapless landings all the time with...

Re: Continental Flt 3407 Crash at Buffalo/Niagra Intr'nal

Very valid point...and worth discussing...... I think that instead of actually turning off the autopilot...we should be more aware of what it's doing...meaning its job is to fly the loc/slope and maintain speed at any cost... it's our job to monitor that it's doing so without stressing itself out.....

They CAN fly with the autopilot off. But never before having had a tailplane icing encounter, and having successfully complete...

Re: Continental Flt 3407 Crash at Buffalo/Niagra Intr'nal

You don't know anything about the effects of icing because you don't operate in it. Sorry, but that comment is just complete and utter bullshit. Every pilot, whether private or commercial, must know about icing even if they have never flown in it. Ice affects my cessna 172 much more than your jet b...

Re: Continental Flt 3407 Crash at Buffalo/Niagra Intr'nal

If an error does occur, we now recognize that there was a failure (or more frequently multiple failures) in the system or process. Those failures are what let the pilot down! What warm and fuzzy, politically correct crap, that statement is! I am following this with interest. It's time everybody rev...

Re: Continental Flt 3407 Crash at Buffalo/Niagra Intr'nal

You have said this a few times now. The NTSB announced that the crew was discussing the icing conditions, did the crew also say that they were in severe ice. From the AIM Severe The rate of accumulation is such that de-icing or anti-icing equipment fails to reduce or control the hazard. Immediate d...

Re: Continental Flt 3407 Crash at Buffalo/Niagra Intr'nal

Now we seem to have the facts we can stop speculating and start looking for answers. Assuming the de-icing system was working, does this mean they were flying into conditions that the plane was not certified for (i.e. severe icing)? And when they saw the ice buildup on the leading edges should they...

Re: Where did West Wind Aviation thread go???

Flyinthebug. Where do I start. I'll go point form so even you can understand. 1) You dont need a union to get things done. A union only leaves a bitter taste in managements mouth and then they get difficult. The management should have a bitter taste in their mouth because they fired pilots with no r...
