Re: Night Rating
All good stuff. Strong ++ to the period after the runway slides away under the nose until you have a discernable horizon as being the most dangerous part of a night flight. Which is why a strong base in IF is so important before solo, especially in the circuit. Front load any required IF flying so a...

Interesting. I have been ramp checked twice in Gatwick, in 2019 & 2020. Was not asked for a personal logbook either time.

Re: Christen Eagle II or an RV14A??
The Eagle is an Aerobatic airplane that can be flown cross-country. The RV14 is a cross-country machine that can do aerobatics. The Eagle is capable of competing at the Intermediate contest level and flying at the Advanced level, but it is limited in it's cross-country capabilities. I plan on about ...

Re: Getting PPL on a Retractable Gear (Insurance Question)
I trained a 14 year old from scratch to a PPL & night rating on his father's Cardinal RG. Used an Extra 300 for stall/spin training. Cardinal RG was insured for $2M liability only, no hull, through Marsh I believe. There were no time/training minimas mentioned.

Re: 5680
From AIP Canada Section 1 GEN 3.4 Frequency 5,680 kHz provides long-range air-ground communications coverage in the remote areas of Canada for the provision of FISE beyond the range of VHF communications. Aircraft must use HF-SSB when communicating on 5,680 kHz. The following RCO locations provide F...

Re: Flight instructor with no medical
Quote "co-joe - The ultralight instructor thing is just a medical attestation I think." Not the op's question but No. The Ultralight (& Glider) Instructor rating require a Class 3 Medical - attestation won't cut it. Category 4 IS valid for the ULPP and the GPL, but not the Instructor ratings. Standa...

Re: Flight Training in Saskatoon through Mitchinson or Millennium?
trey kule said: “50,000 flight hrs“ Do the math! I think he might be a little high, likely only 45,000 or so. The math is easy - 50,000 hours over 70 years = 714 hrs/year. Less than 2 hours a day. The guy is 86 years old, soloed at 16, mostly charter & flight instruction after a short te...

Re: Aerobatics Manuals
I thought "Basic Aerobatics" was more likely written by Szurovy than Goulian. Not enough theory for me. A caution - Some of the explanations of control positions seem to be referenced from the viewpoint of an outside observer, which was more than somewhat confusing for a pilot, but very intuitive fo...

Re: 3 1/8" Gyro instruments and a venturi?
It is my understanding that the "size" of the various venturi tubes is the amount of vacuum produced instead of the physical size. Aircraft Spruce advertises 2, 4, & 9 inch venturi tubes. I believe the 2 inch will run a T & B, a 4 inch will run a A/H or DG, and a 9 inch will run both a DG & a A/H. I...

Re: Red Bull mid-air at Aero India
Basically, IAC/ICAS require you to wear a chute when taking part in competitions or air displays in North America. However, I understand it to be optional at air displays in the UK, and some other European countries, but most performers do wear them. Trying to stuff a "XL" sized pilot into a "S" siz...

Zlin 50's - Czech built, these ones have Lycoming AEIO-540s. Flown by the "Flying Bulls Aerobatic Team", Classic airshow formation aerobatics. Nothing to do with the "Red Bull Air Race" group aside from sponsor.

Re: Pitts special doing aerobatics, evening May 5th 2014
I guess it shows how important airshow aerobatics is to TC, if they would consider 4 ACEs sufficient for all of Canada. John Mzarek in BC, Bill Carter & Ken Fowler in AB doesn't leave much for the rest of the country. I imagine it will stay cheaper to import an American! (Rob Mitchell only does Jet/...

Re: Deleted
Apologies PilotDAR, my context was regarding the stall characteristics of the DC-4. Most of the Lakes I've flown were stock, older La4-180 or 200s. The cabin top mounted heater seemed to make the commotion/noise (as-stated) worse, which illustrates the source of the turbulence. The only time I tried...

Re: Stall Speed
I've seen a couple of reasons proposed as to why. Propwash and turbulence from the Cowl Flaps. The prop blast would have to have a resultant A of A of around 18 degrees, which I find hard to believe without engine mounts that look like Salvador Dali had a hand in the design. A more rational ...

Re: Bailed on a trip today.
One of the problems with a good decision like that - you'll never know exactly how good or bad the decision was. Without being in it, you can't know how bad the weather/conditions actually would have been. My bad decisions were always rich in experiences that confirmed the badness, the good decision...
