An old C-180 with a wing X kit would be a good machine. The wing X kit gives it a good usefull load and I think they are better built than a Maule. I never flew a Maule much but never had a problem with a 1500' strip in the Cessna if the trees are not too tall.

Sounds like change idle fuel pressure/mixture needs adjusting on your Clunkinental engine. While your at it have all fuel system pressures set or checked.
