Shock Cooling: Myth or Reality? Powerplant management guru Kas Thomas of TBO ADVISOR examines the physics and metallurgy of "shock cooling" and concludes that, contrary to the conventional wisdom, it is not a major contributor to cylinder head cracking. He is author of numerous aviation books and is...

That is why at a lot of airlines the call is "Positive RATES" Where you are looking for the VSI as well as altimeter increase. If you use this some of the stuff that has been described in here will be avoided.

Re: Finding a pilot
We were climbing out of Edmonton one summer in 737-200 northbound. We had an Air Cadet in the Jump seat. Huge line of thunderstorms, we were trying to pick our way through it or get on top. Center held us at 25 ish, wouldn't give us higher, didn't want us to turn. We were getting the shit kicked out...

Re: Prop Overhaul
Perhaps someone could explain to me why a Constant Speed prop has been mandated by TC for a 10 year overhaul, however Fixed Pitch aluminum props (McCauley) have to be overhauled every 6 years. There is a provision for a 5 year dimension and corrosion check, which suddenly our AMO can no longer do an...

Re: Removing oil cap after flight.
The possibility of inadvertently leaving the cap off negates any positive results from the minuscule amount of moisture. Besides don't you think that the engine manufacture has taken this into account? A very experienced AME once told me never leave anything undone that can be done up. Its just a re...

I know how to make flying completely safe.......
Ground all aircraft, it's unnatural and shud be banned!!!
That's what TC really wants!
Ridiculous idea? Just as ridiculous as banning SPIFR.

Re: First Air Crash Resolute Bay August 20 2011
Boeing 737-200 AFM tailwind limitation is 15K. Wind at time of occurrence was 150 to 180 degrees true at 8 - 18k might have influenced whether or not to do a straight in on ILS for 35. My condolences to all those involved. One of the FA's had been there since NWT Air Days.

Re: Canada looking at building military bases in Arctic
Resolute Bay and Nanisivik are gravel runways and not regularly serviced by civillian airlines.
Uhhhhhhhhhh What about First Air?
Think its still a civilian airline and goes into both YRB an YSR with Boeings!!!!
(They also go to Cambridge Bay with 737-200 which is also gravel.)

The operator of the Waco UPF-7 Rides is Central Aviation. They operate out of the Reynolds Museum in Wetaskiwin, and out of Rockcliffe Field in Ottawa. They hold a 703 and 704 OC and also operate executive Charters with Navajos, and a Citation 500 as well as the Bi-plane rides. Here is the link if a...

Re: think before you transmit
One of my pet peeves is listening to guys say " x, x OH" for an altitude (example 35oh). They may think it sounds cool, but it is wrong. Listen to the Controllers reply. Controllers are taught proper radio terminology and will reply with x,x,zero. O is a letter. Correct would be "x,x,zero" The other...

Re: Transport Takeover of 604 POC's
Good point, but "602.127 (1) Unless otherwise authorized by the appropriate air traffic control unit, the pilot-in-command of an IFR aircraft shall, when conducting an approach to an aerodrome or a runway, ensure that the approach is made in accordance with the instrument approach procedure." If you...

Re: Transport Takeover of 604 POC's
I, as I am sure a lot of people are, just a little confused by the "Ops Spec". I understand that you do need an ops spec 99 to do most RCAP GPS approaches, but trying to de-cipher the Transport rules it could be interpreted that you need an ops spec to do any GPS approaches including overlays. So ev...

Re: Local IFR clearance?
How easy it is depends a great deal on which center you are dealing with. Edmonton Center is very accommodating and will give pop up clearance's with virtually no hassel. (HeadingAltitudeSpeed sounds like your from Edmonton Center). Montreal on the other hand is near impossible to get a Pop up. They...

Re: How do you submitt an application to Transport Canada?
First thing you have to do is find out if they are looking for people. Best way is to check this website:
http://jobs-emplois.gc.ca/index-eng.htm
Then submit your application for specific jobs that they have posted. Expect to wait a long time!

Re: Transport Takeover of 604 POC's
That's what it sound like. Anything from a King Air 200 down can be operated like any General Aviation aircraft so long as its not a Turbo Jet and has less than 9 PAX sets. But the issue is that no one, not CBAA, not Transport can verify if this will be the case. CBAA has tried to get an answer, but...

Transport Takeover of 604 POC's
I found this on the CBAA web site: "Applicability for those operators requiring a POC will be slightly different and will reflect the standards and recommendation practices established by ICAO in Annex 6, Part 2, coming in to effect on November 1, 2010. These standards and recommendations are as fo...

I am curious where and why the practice of using Phonetics for saying registrations developed. I suppose that except for us Longer in the tooth pilots no one really remembers, but seems to me it used to be a lot better when you could just say the letters. The primary limiting factor of any communica...

604 Ops Manuals
Does anyone know where you can get a "boiler plate" 604 Ops manual. Company I am flying for has a Pressurized Piston Twin and really doesn't need a 604, but I am thinking it might be a good way to go before transport takes it back and it becomes a Gong Show.
Thanks for any help.

The proper way would be to say CYAB at (time) Destination. By broadcasting that it is "NEXT" it infers that it is just the next reporting point, not your destination.

Re: Professionalism/phraseology
Talking about Radio phraseology, it always amazes me when guys will report at FL xx OH.. O is a letter. If you listen to ATC they will almost invariably reply; check you level at FL xx ZER0. The other thing that I find really irritating is when guys are off of somewhere and do a blind broadcast sayi...
