Re: Single Otters over represented in fatal accidents?
Otters certainly are overrepresented in accident reports. It has little to do with the design or operating conditions and more to do with attitude or the overall "culture" of air taxi operators and float operators in particular. Consider the fact that the operating rules are supposed to limit these...

Re: Plane down between Wrigley and Fort Simpson
The pilot is alive and well. After a Few hours of searchIng we located the crash site, but not the pilot. While returning for fuel the other machine picked him up in more or less good condition, which is amazing considering the state of the airplane. Thanks to the Herc and other chopper involved in ...

Re: Second best job ever
Hehe...it would be fun. The only problem I can see with that scene is that is was at night. I don't know how many of you have ever had the pleasant experience of landing a floatplane in the dark, but it certainly is not as relaxing as portrayed in the episode. Although one can always dream...it woul...

Re: DHC-2T vs DHC-3T
I may as well ad my opinion into the mix, since it is a wednesday...and wednesdays are the days I usually give my opinions. Since you do not require IFR capability, but would like a fuel-burn similar to the Turbo Beaver, I would suggest a Garrett-equipped Otter. You'll have all the short/hot/high al...

Re: Helmets and Fixed-wing
I don't think helmets and fixed-wing are a big deal really. In certain applications they make complete sense for sure, such as crop dusting, fire-fighting, etc. In the summer I primarily do off-strip work in the arctic in a turbulent Otter on wheels, and some of the strips are fairly short, often wi...

Re: Amphibs
If you're talking about airplanes equipped with amphibious floats, I'd have to say that my experience with them has led me to believe that they work just fine off gravel, and well-maintained grass strips, although you will notice some loss in performance. Unless there was a strong crosswind, I did a...

Re: Braking vs. Reverse Thrust
When flown and taxied properly a Caravan should not use much reverse or brakes under normal circumstances. After touchdown reverse is useful sometimes to take the top-end off a bit, (remember, aerodynamic braking is most effective at high speeds) but BETA will usually suffice unless you're going int...

Re: Blade Latches C208 Float Plane
Dare Devil, Yes, latches are an option on the 208, but in my opinion the operator should have them installed if you're doing any amount of serious float work. Part of the novelty of flying a turbine-powered floatplane is versatility and latches are part of that equation as they allow you to dock a p...

Re: Rotation work, Days off?
The 'perfect rotation' can be very subjective, since it will vary for each person. I find 3 weeks on/off works very well for me. It's enough time off to go do something yet not get too rusty, and still provides enough time to get back into the swing of things and fully into the groove at work. Two w...

I'll also vouch for the 50D...over 2k hrs on it now and it's still going strong. As far as the shades go, I just tip the arms up so that they go over top of the ear-seal. It's looks kinda weird but...never having been one to care too much about that sort of thing it's all good. I'd rather look a lit...

Cheyenne 400 LS vs. MU-2
Hello folks! Considering that these two (along with maybe the Conquest 2) are some of the worlds fastest turbo-props in their class on paper I'm looking for a comparison along with some first hand information. I'm wondering which one of these two planes would be more viable in a charter environment,...

ANR and long-term hearing damage?
I've heard somewhere that ANR could possibly cause long-term hearing damage. Apparently the U.S. Military found that after 6 years or so of ANR use hearing diminished in the test subjects. The argument has something to do with the fact that yes, noise is being cancelled, but now there are just more ...

I'll also vouch for the Stratus 50D. Yes it is a little big, I've found it comfortable, quiet, durable...and I'm learning Spanish on the long survey flights through the music jack. So far it's been great behind everything from an R-985, Garrett and PT-6. Often, while taxiing the Caravan at idle whil...

Hello, I was wondering what the boys and girls of Edmonton center think about the following scenario in the NDAS. Say I was cruising along at FL225 - just 500' below the floor of your airspace - VFR, in something like a Turbine Otter equipped with O2. Personally, I would give you guys a courtesy ('b...

Yes, the movies are nice...but...not a NECESSITY, really, when doing 85% the speed of sound. Re: PC-12 Engine Shut Down
jetflightinstructor, Perhaps you don't realize that comparing the PC-12 with the Beaver is like comparing apples against oranges. The only thing the two have in common is (ironically) that they are both a single-engine aircraft. Even so, a comparison cannot be made by accident figures alone since th...

The great thing about 'The War on Terror' is that it can go on forever. There's alot of money to be made, and people to be killed. There's lot's of terrorists too, all of us. It's like the witch-hunt back in the day. All you have to do is point and yell "terrorist" and you got no rights, no f.ck all...

Re: Type 4
You are correct! I've never had the pleasure of dealing with Type 4 on a Van, but if I had the chance to use it, I would. I'd way rather have a bunch of green goop on the wings of the Caravan than a whole lot of ice. Keeping the flaps up makes it easier to 'hold it on' for the higher rotation speed....

Re: Need an airplane ferried East-West?
I never said I was going to do it for free. My price varies depending on what kind of flying I'm doing, but I do alright. It was just a thought, and if someone actually was in need of such a ferry flight, the fact that I'm already 'here', and need to end up 'there' is merely just a convenience. I'm ...

Need an airplane ferried East-West?
G'day folks, Just hanging out in Nova Scotia on some time off, but looking at heading west towards BC in the next few days. If you know of anyone that needs an aircraft moved across the country, or needs a passenger/crew member, I'd be more than happy to do it. I have experience in most small single...
