xsbank wrote: In helicopter mode below 1600 feet, engine failure would not be survivable There are few rotary wing aircraft that are as safe as fixed wing but the Osprey's common drive shaft allows it to fly (or at least make a safe landing)on one engine. So as long as the pilot doesn't run out of g...

Caley wrote Check it out. http://www.uflymike.com I agree, I've had mine for a couple of weeks now. They're just about as light as a Telex 750 but have the Bose noise canceling. The mike itself is top notch and the single AAA battery is mounted in the headphone so you aren't dragging around a batter...

Got a light while taxiing for take-off a couple of weeks ago and shut it down (low overcast - no direct sunlight). In the -200 you can certainly see the engines from the cockpit. Does anyone know if you could expect to visually confirm a fire in all cases? Personally, I think that if you decide not ...

No one who has any political or financial association with the native community will ever petition for any meaningful change. If a native wants to live a respectful and productive life there are few options short of leaving the reserve. Native money in Canada has great deal in common with the finan...

Forgive me a brief thread jack please. Concestor, I'm completely bafled by your coment that a person's spirituality is limited by his DNA. Could you clarify for me? I have seen no evidence at all for spirituality of any kind outside of mankind's naive desires. DNA's all we have to work with - let's...

We also have an ancient impulse towards self-preservation. Protecting yourself our your family with a gun in a life threatening situation is a valid purpose in my books. How many people in Canada do you know feel the need to keep a gun in their house to feel safe? Do you? I doubt the gunman wouldn'...

Sure, there are plenty of ways for people to kill each other if they choose - but why make it easy? Guns are single purpose. Recreational shooting? I suppose it can be explained by our genetic makeup but why give in to an ancient impulse to be violent. If someone wants to buy a bad ass gun to blast ...

I've landed there a few times but only with tail draggers. Runway 36/18 is in the best shape. You have to watch out for the cattle tracks, ant hills and such so do a good thorough overfly. It's been a few years but with the right AC you might be OK. The only way to be absolutly sure is to walk it fi...

The 02 valve may have been frozen. Our SOP's on the '200 require us to turn on the 02 above 10,000 before there is a chance of it freezing shut when you need it. In any case my FO and I where sailing along at FL260 yesterday and discussing how strong the '200's actually are - I guess I know now! "Th...

The root of the problem
Cloudcounter's strong convictions to irrational ideas demonstrates very strongly how the human thought process can be highjacked by the human belief process . Remember Pilot Decision Making (PDM) training? This training is centered around the knowledge that what pilots think and do is highly influen...

This site includes Richard Dawkins and many others lecturing on the same topic. The best speeches were given by Dawkins, Shermer, Harris and Porco so far. There's quite a bit to watch but well worth it.

No doubt it's a common problem but fairly easy to prevent. If you're two crew, verbally indicate to the second crew member that you are turning off/down a particular frequency that you want them to monitor. If you're single pilot keep you're finger on the volume knob for the few seconds it takes you...

Fatigue is a much greater issue
The issue here is inebriation of any kind. Counting the number of drinks or pills or puffs is a convenient way of estimating how long you should wait to fly again but the effects of fatigue are harder to judge. My pet peeve is how often a pilot will show up totally unrested and then work a 14 hr shi...
