Re: nav can awws site closure

For those who haven't seen it, this is a great Canadian aviation weather site that I've been using frequently. It doesn't have everything (like radar and satellite) but it has GFAs, METARs/TAFs, and NOTAMs in one place nicely organized:

Re: Attitude Indicator vs Artificial Horizon

BPF, a Nanchang pilot told me it's because the AI they use is a "fixed ball in space" design similar to the Sperry attitude gyro. In the Sperry, a pitch up would cause the airplane wings to move down to the blue side of the fixed ball, and when pitching down the wings would move up to the brown side...

Re: Canadian Air Force

You're right, the obligatory 4 years of service after milcol is not additive to the 10 year restricted release, but the four years it takes to finish milcol (or civi university) is. So if someone is joining now, without a degree, they will take about 4 years to complete university, another 2-3 years...

Re: Canadian Air Force

Do you guys have a take on the idea of joining up with the air force for the training then signing up with a major once the 7 years of obligatory service are done? Is it a good way to get started as a pilot if you're too strapped for cash to fork over $100k+ for training? For new pilots the restric...

Re: Canadian Air Force

SamuelTheKitty, I would say your post has some truth to it, but it's a bit of an exaggeration. Yes, there are aspects of a military flying career that suck, and that's especially the case with the RCAF. And yes, those aspects are not advertised and glossed over by recruiters. But that is also true o...

Re: Canadian Air Force

FYI as a flight instructor for over thirty years with more than 20 thousand hours of flight instruction I spent two weeks in Portage flying the Grob 120, many of the new wannabe pilots were sent home after their first flight because they couldn't stomach being put through a couple of steep turns, P...

mRNA instructs the DNA what proteins to create.
Mmmm, no. mRNA instructs ribosomes what proteins to create. It does not instruct DNA, and DNA does not create proteins.

While not exactly the same engine, the fuel control unit on a Bell 412 with the PT6T twin pac had some issues with runaway engines in cold weather due to moisture in one of the lines freezing, if memory serves correctly. I recall the procedure was to switch to manual fuel governing right after engin...

Re: Liley: Trudeau showing favouritism to Quebec for new aircraft.

What, in your personal opinion, makes the A220 or the Global a superior maritime patrol aircraft over the P8? They may have the physical footprint to carry ordinance, but as far as I know neither of the airframes have ever been fitted for them. This would require significant modifications to the air...

Sounds like it could have been a problem similar to this: https://tc.canada.ca/en/aviation/reference-centre/civil-aviation-safety-alerts/service-difficulty-advisories/cessna-150-172-175-steering-tube-pn-0543022-xx-service-difficulty-advisory While the decision to takeoff may not have been the best i...

If you look very closely at the space between the poles he flies through, you will notice there are no wires. I learned something as a child that sometimes slips my mind... Just because you don't see something doesn't mean it isn't there. The stars are always there. You'll also notice the orange st...

the belt driven, automotive alternator was turning up about nine-thousand rpm in cruise (which really impressed the manufacturer of the unit who wanted the third one that failed back to examine!) The cooling fan on the alternator failed in overspeed (the blades stretched until they failed, resultin...

Re: Did I waste Time And Money?

I'm firmly in the camp that home flight sims definitely CAN be helpful, as long as the right attitude is applied. First off, it's important to realize that it is a training aide with limited fidelity and is definitely not flying. You can add fidelity to it through accurate controls, VR, etc. but it ...

If you want a good weather book that will help you learn the big picture rather than just what is required to pass exams, I suggest "Weather Flying" by Robert N. Buck and Robert O. Buck.

U.K., Denmark, Netherlands, Finland, Ireland... COVID no longer poses a threat to society. When will the PM acknowledge our society wishes to do the same? He could end this protest today if he just set a date, so long as it's before summer. Setting a specific date would be completely baseless. Why ...

I think its time, if all truckers are no more than Racist Homophobic Misogynistic terrorists, that they leave Ottawa…go home….and commence a general strike. No violence. No protest. Just stop driving. Immediately. A month would be great. I’m guessing the rhetoric would change. What would the govern...
