Re: Very appropriate letter to the editor
The moment I got to the part about voting for Turdeau in 2019, Mr. Smalls cryfest lost all credibility. As if the first 4 years wasn't enough to demonstrate how much of a flake this PM is, ya gotta turn around and vote for him again. I would have thought critical analysis is a valuable asset for com...

Re: Non Aviation Employers Don't Respect Pilot Experience
Get your AZ or DZ license. Plenty of truck driving jobs long hall or regional day trips. 7k investment. You may qualify for government funding. Starting pay could be as high as $35/hr. There is a truck driving shortage. The US is currently taking Canadian drivers with sponsorship and all. Great way...

Re: Landing legally off-airport for recreation
If the road you're about to depart/arrive on is in a province that forbids it, that's a problem. If the road is a narrow, two lane setup with a yellow center line it could be an expensive problem. All the years of tracking a runway center line will definitely lead to your tracking the roads yellow l...

Re: Which Aircraft For PPL and CPL Training?
PA-22-108 Colt 2017 figures. Insurance (2 seats): 400.00. This was a "silver Wings" policy from Marsh Canada. it was third party liability, with no "in motion" hull coverage. In other words, I damage A/C under power, it's outta my pocket. There was also coverage for not-in-motion, for example, hail ...

Re: Which Aircraft For PPL and CPL Training?
After exhaustively researching your dream, and still hell bent on ownership, buy a mint 150/152. Spend 50 grand on it if you have to, but make sure it's mint. Last "mint" 152 I saw advertised was nearly $100k. That's a lot for two seats. Forget 4 seats. You pay more insurance for 'em. If you're wor...

4. After exhaustively researching your dream, and still hell bent on ownership, buy a mint 150/152. Spend 50 grand on it if you have to, but make sure it's mint. Mint because you're thinking re-sell. Not an ex-flying club high timer!! The big thing is the engine. IT MUST BE FLOWN REGULARLY!! If it'...

Re: Which Aircraft For PPL and CPL Training?
You've never owned a general aviation A/C, have you? How about you correct what you think is wrong instead of making erroneous assumptions? My erroneous assumption was based on some suspect, potentially erroneous numbers you threw out in your first post. As for correcting what is wrong, I don't int...

Re: Which Aircraft For PPL and CPL Training?
To the OP, listen and consider advice from owners. Especially owners who have done what you are considering. And AME's involved with general aviation. Ignore the rest. You want to make an informed decision based on solid advice. Sole ownership will cost you thousands and thousands. Maybe tens of tho...

Re: Which Aircraft For PPL and CPL Training?
Hi everyone. I have recently made the decision to start my PPL and probably go commercial later. My plan is to have my own aircraft and do my PPL and CPl and maybe just keep the airplane if I'm happy with it. I have a few questions for you guys as you probably know a lot more than I do. 1. Which ai...

Re: Community/Residential Air Parks
Skysailor, I can't really speak to "average". In my case I sold my home in Edmonton using it to finance my new home in Westaskiwin. It happens to be in a hangar at the airport. I'd say $400K isn't far off average for a primary residence in Alberta. The one advantage in this row of hangars are that ...

Re: Community/Residential Air Parks
Thanks for the info. I have seen the setup in Wetaskiwin, noticed what appeared to be civic numbering on the various structures, and wondered if setting up a 365 day residential occupancy was possible. Six or seven years ago there was a small airfield in the greater Edmonton area (not Parkland), se...

Re: 212 knot ultralight with Rotax!
I too had a BD5 fiasco kit. Fuselage hull, "B" wings (skinned, with only a couple of rivets. Waiting for the pre-close inspection that'll never happen), tail feathers, couple of wheels, center spar, an' one large crate full of parts. That crate was long. If I had painted it black, it could have pass...

Re: Community/Residential Air Parks
What "few" are in Alberta? 3 that I know of: Twin Island Airpark near Cooking Lake. Grass runway with acreages around it. Okatoks Air Ranch. Unclear to me that there's any live-in hangars there, though certainly homes backing onto the runway. SkyPort at Wetaskiwin airport. I live in my hangar here....

Re: 212 knot ultralight with Rotax!
Blah, blah, blah. The aviation runway is full of racy, cool lookin', theoretical wizardry wreckage. So ya got a composite lightning bolt. Who gives a shit. Of course, no mention of a business plan or market expectations(reality). If this glass fiber rocket actually makes it to a sustainable producti...

Re: Recession incoming
Silver just dropped like nearly .25 of it's value and it's still an easy to recognize physical asset if the Canadian dollar collapses from people collecting $2000/month instead of working to submit tax dollars. You want to pack ounces of gold to barter with go ahead. "Hello, I'd like to trade this ...

Re: Recession incoming
The best time to buy back into the market is when the officials formally announce "We are in a recession", which is 2 consecutive quarters of contraction. By that logic, a good time to buy back in will be June-August Timing the market is an impossible task, and dangerous. I get the buy low, sell hi...

I will continue to hold onto my assets until the inevitable rebound. [/quote] OK, when the inevitable rebound happens, what are you putting your assets in? One big generic mutual fund? Please elaborate. As for the Spam/Hereford suggestion, not really a great investment idea. To prevent short term st...

Re: Recession incoming
Do what the fat cats do. Start a business and exploit your workers. Beg the government for a bailout when you can’t make it. Do it in America because they have no taxes and their debt doesn’t matter. They are doing just ok in this crisis. And so are investors especially if you bought indexed funds ...
