Re: Useful Android apps

Favourite? Well, I've only tried a couple so I can't really say. I bought a cheap ($89) Samsung Tab A6 on eBay and, although I have some aviation apps on it I really only use it for three things: 1) Moving map display, Velcro'd to the instrument panel. The onboard GPS works well enough and I have a ...

Re: Researching grandfather's - RAF / RCAF - how/where

Don`t forget that many Canadians joined the RCAF but were seconded to the RAF. My father served in RAF 578 Squadron 4 Group Bomber Command, in an all-Canadian crew.

Re: Researching grandfather's - RAF / RCAF - how/where

BCATP Museum in Brandon, MB may be a starting place for one grandfather.

Without a service number or a squadron number it might be difficult to get info on the other.

But we have several members here who are much more knowledgeable than I.

Or maybe you mean "The Ice Pilots" by Michael Vlessides, published by D&M Publishers.

Some information there about Joe's early years, though most of the book is about the current company.

Re: Why is flying so expensive?

There is always an option - go back to basics, a self maintained cub with no fancy stuff and enjoy what general aviation should be all about --- fun and if you want to go some place in a hurry buy an airline ticket. Yes! I surprised myself when I came to the realization that I enjoy maintaining my ...

Re: Engine heaters.

I'm sure the Tanis is a good system. Personally I prefer the Reiff because the cylinder heaters do not occupy the port for the cylinder head temperature probes. It's a fallacy that heating the engine electrically will add moisture. It can't, and won't. In fact it will make the air under the cowling ...

Re: 2 float plane crashes near Lutselke on same day

The "lessons" have nothing to do with flying or with decision-making! I would not presume to pass judgement on a very experienced pilot like Dave Olesen. The lessons are: File a flight plan or itinerary. Have a "bail-out" bag handy. Carry some survival items on you (matches at least). Wear your life...

Re: Where to keep logbook

What about the Journey Log? I understand there's a legal requirement to carry it onboard, but the chance of loss is always present.

One could keep the JL at home, and enter the data from notes after the flight.

Do I do that? Uhh ......

Austin Airways mishap, 1986

Was there an TSB report on this accident? Sounds like it would be interesting reading. On 19 January 1986, Douglas C-47A C-GNNA struck a 150 feet (46 m) high Non-directional beacon tower and crashed at Sachigo Lake Airport, Ontario.[7] After clipping the top of the tower the pilot lost use of ailero...

There are cheaper ways to get your ATV to camp.

On the other hand, if you have five years and a few hundred thousand bucks just lying around ....

Re: Yellowknife sights in August

Old town is a float-plane haven. (Buffalo) Joe might have his Norseman at the dock. Otherwise, Buffalo Airways base might interest you. The bone-yard is cool - and you can get a cap and T-shirt. Is Nunavut one of the missing two? Easy flight from YK to CYCO. Walk around for a few hours and meet the ...

Re: Bush plane capable of carrying ATVs?

As a previous poster stated, there are times (many times!) when it makes much more sense just to charter an appropriate aircraft. Unless you live in the far north, I'm sure you have plenty of options in that regard. Put your ATV's on an Otter, fill it up with other heavy/bulky stuff (propane cylinde...

I've never had to pay a doctor to sign off the Cat 4 medical. But then I live in Nunavut and we seem to get away with stuff here that wouldn't "fly" in the south.
