Re: Ferry Flight to Australia
I've done this route about a dozen times.
KSMX Santa Maria
PHTO Hilo, (or Maui PHOG)
NSTU American Samoa
YBCG, Gold Coast, Aus
Interestingly, the distance to Hawaii is almost the same from Southern Oregon down to LA.
I've never taken an immersion suit.
PM me if you want to chat.

Re: Fijian Hurricane
The whole country got hammered really badly... death toll is 44 last count. Sounds like many of the planes went in the Fiji Airways (old Air Pacific) hangar.

Re: Pacific Island Air and Seaplanes
I used to work at PIA in Fiji as well. Great lifestyle and fun flying. Dusty is still a good friend. Turtle Air is very different. PIA seaplane salary is around CDN$2500/month now. The float pilots have been there for 2 1/2 years, so that should speak for itself. It's not for everyone, but has been ...

Re: From Russia with Love
Love it! from: http://www.aeroflight.co.uk/types/russia/beriev/be-12/be-12.htm Over the years, the Beriev Be-12 has gained a total of 44 FAI recognized world records for aircraft in its class - all the records possible! During the period October 23-27, 1964, a stripped down aircraft designated M-12 ...

Seems like the pilots handled the problem well... glad to read the post, until the second reply... BWrench, Could have been maintenance, or a broken part, or a bird or... a million things. Why smear a company with "shoddy operators"??? Widow, Egress training? Why take the thread in that direction. S...

Took a while to get this clip out of the archives, and longer to figure out how to get it on the internet. But here's my contribution to the 'Otter vs. Caravan' debate. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2uw3nvJ_sM I heard about that contest, didnt they both go to the end of the lake and both enter th...

Float, You're right, although it's still just under $4000/month to spend in the local economy. 185, You're kinda right too. North, Sell the truck to pay off the loan, and leave the rent to the ex-girlfriend. Hawg, No tipping here. You lose out on income, but you save 10-15% on every meal you eat out...

I've been watching this thread with interest. I'm surprised that more companies don't first look for guys who would just move there and work full-time. It's far better for the company to have a pilot there full-time and without the expense of shipping him back and forth. Or why not pay a guy more to...

I thought all lifejackets did have whistles...? As for dye packs, I can see having them in a liferaft, but don't know about on a jacket. I would doubt a manageable-sized dye pack would be worth having, as a few ounces of dye wouldn't be enough to help being seen. Also issues of durability of the pac...

This is a military site, but is accessible to the public. Takes a while to find your way around, but has good satellite shots of the Oceans you were asking for. Good site if you want the 'big picture.'
