Re: PA 27????
PA23 is the ICAO type designator for the Apache. They use PA27 to differentiate the Aztec despite the fact that according to Piper model nomenclature they are all PA-23s. For whatever reason ICAO uses P28A to designate all 180hp or less PA-28s (Cherokee 235s and Dakotas are P28B) even though there i...

Re: A trip to the beach
So how did you find out about landing on Burnett beach. Or did you just try it? I don't see it listed in COPA's places to fly or anywhere else. [shamelessplug] I found out about it through the BC General Aviation association airstrip map https://www.bcaviation.ca/bc-airstrip-map-intro.html You have...

Re: A trip to the beach
Great video, looks like you had a fun day. It's coming up "video not available" on mobile, which I think is because of the music. Thanks, it was a great day. I've had a few people tell me it doesn't work on mobile, it works fine on my phone and I've posted lots of videos with copyrighted music that...

A trip to the beach
Everyone enjoys a trip to the beach, pilots just have access to better beaches! This is what I was up to last week.

Re: Hydro marker balls being removed from bc hydro lines
I actually got a response out of BC Hydro on social media, they want to talk to me directly about it. I need to know as many locations as possible where this has happened.

Re: Oil filter change
Changing the oil and filter are both elementary maintenance tasks on small privately owned aircraft per CARs 625 app A. You do not need an AME to do that for you, you could just have them show you how and do it yourself if you are so inclined. 9/16" This is true, you can find it here: https://www.t...

It's in CADORS now: At 1914Z, Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Victoria called Kamloops, BC (YKA) Flight Information Centre (FIC) asking for information on a privately registered Piper PA-28R-180 from Kelowna, BC (CYLW) to Green Lake, BC (CBG2) who's emergency locator transmitter (ELT) was ac...

Re: SPOT mounting options for Cessna 172 and Piper Cherokee
If I'm remembering correctly you have a portable Garmin X96 mounted in your panel? That has RS232 output. Maybe because it's a VFR unit you aren't allowed to connect it to the ELT on a certified aircraft? I'll ask my avionics guy. That's right, I have a Garmin 495 (same as the 496, but without the ...

Re: SPOT mounting options for Cessna 172 and Piper Cherokee
That is correct but I have yet to see someone go to all the trouble of installing a 406 and not hook it up to a GPS. Mine is not hooked to a GPS and it's not capable of receiving GPS input. Most GPS capable ELTs require a GPS mounted onboard with RS232 output (most panel mount GPSs have this) for t...

Re: SPOT mounting options for Cessna 172 and Piper Cherokee
How easy would it be to deploy and activate a PLB in the cockpit to ensure it starts transmitting at the first sign of distress? How well would it work as it's sitting (possibly sliding around) on the glareshield as you'd be flying the airplane to its final resting spot? It's these questions which ...

Re: SPOT mounting options for Cessna 172 and Piper Cherokee
This agrees with my thinking, else a simple PLB would be the way to go if one only wanted a signalling device for use once the aircraft is on the ground. Another option would be to deploy the PLB's antenna and activate while in the air. Though, this is still not as good as having the track that the...

Re: SPOT mounting options for Cessna 172 and Piper Cherokee
Doesn't mounting it to the plane kinda defeat the whole point? I'd just keep it in my pocket. If your plane goes in the drink, doubt you'll be thinking of the SPOT when it hits the fan, I'd feel mighty silly getting out of the plane and watching both my ELT AND SPOT sink. Pocket No, it doesn't. Fro...

Re: Headset Competition S1 VS Zulu PFX VS AV100 VS A20
I wonder if that's compatible with custom hearing protection? I have some "DB Blockers" from Custom Protect Ear that are so comfortable I forget I'm wearing them. http://www.protectear.com/ They say there's an aviation application for them but I have trouble finding a headset specifically designed ...

Re: Headset Competition S1 VS Zulu PFX VS AV100 VS A20
I've been thinking of trying a Quiet Technologies Halo. I had a weight lifting accident a few years ago and my neck has never been the same since. If I'm having a bad day, a full day of flying with the weight of a standard headset on my head will leave me with a stiff neck and headache for up to a c...

Re: Buying airplane in Quebec
It's on Barnstormers in the PA20 section. About half way down. It's the only one from Quebec listed. I asked the guy why he's selling in my list of questions and the best I got was "at that price it's a great deal. I don't have time for questions". Something like that. The guy is looking for seriou...

This is an account of the ditching written by the pilot: Final Flight of IHJE. I left Grand Forks for Qualicum on Monday April 18th at 6:45 am In my Allegro 2000 ultralight airplane. I received a weather briefing from FSS in Kamloops. The weather was forcast to be VFR along the route no reports of c...

My memory isn't that fresh, but I still have my flight test report 12 years later. My PPL flight test went quite well over all. I wound up scoring a 128 of the required 75 to pass (15x5, 9x4, 3x3, 2x2). Going through the report, the only twos I got were for the normal takeoff (forgot to retract flap...
