Re: Why is flying so expensive?

Yes, we've always been fine pre-PPL partners (just not pre-PPL when we were considering selling block time) We've rented a 172 in the past to cover spins, since the tapered wing pipers aren't certified for them Are you taking pre-PPL partners yet? I had barely 4 hours of dual when I started Where di...

Re: Why is flying so expensive?

For anyone interested, we have a few, 1/4 shares available for sale in our Piper Warrior, based at YTZ. I formed this partnership 7 years ago after I got my first bill for 1.1hours of Dual which ended up being something like $300 after HST. Instead, $12,500 per share gets you fractional ownership an...

Re: Why is flying so expensive?

Solution - PARTNERSHIPS are one of the easiest ways to bring the costs down significantly. I'm not sure why there aren't more partnerships (2-5 people) or flying clubs (6-20 people) around. Maybe there are and I don't know about em? Consider: Tie down - same amount regardless of pilots, can be split...

Re: CYTZ partnership?

I'm part of a partnership on a 1983 Piper Warrior II. We're not actively looking for a 5th person but always open to it! All 4 of us are office surfing 9-5'ers. Laid back group, we schedule using Google calendar, send a text to let peeps know what our plans are, thats it. Our costs are very modest. ...

Cool block time available CYTZ ($85/hr-DRY)

Cool block time. $85/Hr (DRY) What makes it cool block time as opposed to just "regular" block time? Firstly, we're cool guys. All of us. How do I know? Cause you have to be cool to live in this town and NOT like the Jays right now. And we're looking for some cool guys or gals to purchase block time...

Re: Low pass at YYZ

I know someone who recently did this, but it was quite late at night (after 11pm). My guess would be that either past 11 or mid day off peak ( as mentioned above) would work. That said, City centre closes at 11 so u would have to plan carefully if u were to do this in bound - ie cross over yyz at 10...

Re: PCAS: Zaon XRX

Sorry, I should have been more clear. What I meant to communicate is that it does a very good job at detecting traffic and yes, it does so "promptly" but it may not work 100% of the time. There may be the odd occasions where for whatever reason, the traffic is late to appear or, or may not appear at...

Re: PCAS: Zaon XRX

The XRX is ideal for the GTA. It freeloads off transponder responses from radar and other TIS equipped aircraft. Given the strong presence of both in the Toronto area, the unit is particularly effective, but definitely note my above example of my approach to Burlington where radio calls and looking ...

Re: PCAS: Zaon XRX

I finally got one just recently after months (possibly over a year) of going back and forth looking for info on its usefulness. Heres what I can tell you so far. Cons: Price - it hurts. $1400 or so. False sense of security - it is up to the pilot to remember that primary collision avoidance is their...

Re: Air Canada Express and Jazz.

Man, this really makes me sad. From a purely aesthetic point of view, its a great looking plane. But the implications of the "AC Express" brand are troubling. There are so many challenges with the Canadian airline industry, the one bright spot (in my opinion) was the colorful and proud Jazz brand. P...

Re: Guelph Air Show

Thanks to the Tiger Boys and all the volunteers that put on the open house this weekend. I stopped by for a few hours and had great time! The ride in the Fleet Finch which was a blast and I'll definitely be back next year. I was just wondering if any other the photographers (the folks on the hill or...

Re: Guelph Air Show

Just wondering if there are any special procedures for heading to Guelph this weekend. Anyone directing traffic? Or just call up NC4 traffic and communicate intentions? What time does it begin?

Thanks.

Re: Wake turbulence avoidance and what is up with B757

Dan, assuming you are flying at YTZ in a light single, you definitely need to be aware of the wake turbulence from Dash 8's. It can be a busy airport at times and Tower watches out for the little guys but I have to admit that I was probably becoming a bit complacent at respecting wake turbulence/sep...

Re: Taxes?

I Did this math as well when considering a share of a plane vs. FTU training... In the end, the savings from operating your share at $70 wet is far better than paying more, then getting the crummy tax refund much latter. Also, I *THINK* If I remember correctly, the flight training course has to be a...

Re: Canadian Flyers inc or Island air flight school

Finished my PPL at Toronto Island recently. I can't comment on Island Air or Canadian Flyers (although I know a very good instructor at Island Air), but the Toronto Island training environment is VERY expensive relative to other airports. Someone mentioned you would save about $10,000 by doing your ...

Re: Pa-28-140 Performance question

Don't take this the wrong way, and obviously this is just my opinion, but if a $17/hr change in operating costs would make your ownership "unaffordable", you may want to take another hard look at owning. Since the beginning of this year, our hourly fuel costs have gone up $9-10. It would be a shame ...

High Density Altitudes at YTZ

Quick question for (mainly) for the Porter folks at YTZ... any issues with the high density altitudes on days like this? Can you go with a 75% plus load with fuel to YUL and EWR with a 2200 ft density alt?
