Re: Carson Air Ad
I am currently working for a 703/4 company and YES I have a bond, but i don't pay a cent unless I leave before my 12 months are up. In which case I must pay the remaining pro-rated balance on the bond. Seems fair, but that's just my opinion. What happens if before the 12 months are up the company y...

Re: Should the government be funding flight training at all?
Of course the people who run these government funded programs would dispute that they don’t allow their students to fly in adverse weather conditions, and that their training does not prepare their students to be of any use to a potential employer. It is in their best interest to deny it. But if thi...

Re: Should the government be funding flight training at all?
In my opinion no, the government should not be funding flight training at all. Most of these programs are a joke. They do not provide their graduates with the skills necessary to be of any use to most operators. They have a cookie cutter approach to flight training, and they close the flight line an...

Re: Restrict Flight Training to Gov, funded programs?
This is one of the many reasons why I think a lot of people should be fearful of the proposed College of Professional Pilots. Many people I have talked to who are in favour of the College of Professional Pilots idea seem to think that the creation of the college will be the first step towards eventu...

Re: Boundary Bay flight schools
BTW when I do a Flight Instructor rating the first 5 hours is a job interview. If in my opinion the student will not be a good instructor than the I will fire the student. I know of a couple of class 2 instructors who were "fired" by their original class one instructor when they were a class 4 cand...

Re: What are the best courses to take
Shiny side up thanks for the advice. But I wasn’t making assumptions; I was speaking from my own experiences from working with instructor’s, dispatchers at flight schools, and dispatchers at airlines. Ground jobs are ok, as long as the pay is fair and you’re not being taken advantage of. Early in my...

Re: What are the best courses to take
I wouldn’t call the industry standard for a dispatcher “pathetic”. I know a number of flight school dispatchers who are not pilots and they actually get paid quite well. But it is has become common practice in the last couple years for flight instructors to work dispatch while getting paid substanti...

Re: What are the best courses to take
Of course CFI's and owners are going to promote instuctors having to work dispatch before getting a flying job. Thats because they are managing a business, and it is their job to keep costs as low as possible. One way to minimize costs is to take advantage of eager new class 4's who will work for le...

Re: Where should I apply to start working ramp?
Times have changed since the old pilots here started...Either adapt to the changes or move on. Yes, but it's not like things have changed for the better. I don't think Bear needs to adapt, based on what he has said it sounds like he has had a flying job for years. He is just lamenting what this ind...

Re: Responding to Cadors
People like to make a big deal about CADORS around the water cooler, but as far as the student's future as a pilot goes they are usually not a big deal. I wouldn't get too upset about it.

Re: Where to report Flight School violations
The problem has to do with administration, students, and instructors 'buying' and reporting false time in logbooks, as well as instructors being told to show up for work when there are no bookings, and put in time without being compensated. I'm not sure if this is the industry norm or what, but my ...

Re: Fellow Instructors
Hi Freddy, unfortunately this is not a good time to be a new class 4 instructor. In the last 2 weeks I have seen 2 other threads about a school in Alberta and another in Ontario closing. So that’s 2 schools that have shut down in a span of 2 weeks! This probably means that there are about 10-20 expe...

Re: What are the best courses to take
As for what courses to take you can get your PPL anywhere. Just go in to the school and talk to the instructors and make sure you feel comfortable at the place. If you want to fly floats a lot of your time building towards your CPL can be done on a float plane after you get your PPL. I would also su...

Re: The million dollar questions...
It was not too long ago that I was the 200-300 hour guy working the dock hoping to get promoted. Since then I have had a few flying jobs. In all these places I have met a lot of low time pilots and I really don’t recall meeting one person who struck me as having a sense of entitlement. I have enjoye...

There were a few that got screwed over the years but they screwed themselves by exhibiting a poor attitude and work ethic. Road trip, go where people don't want to work, supply and demand! My advice, do NOT do the road trip this year, save your money. I just got back from a road trip through northern Ontario, Manitoba and all the way to B.C. and then back again. I slept in my car half the time and still managed to rack...

Re: Instructor jobs out west
I think someone told me that Pacific Flying Club at CZBB sometimes hires the Class 4’s that they train. But I think the catch is that you would also have had to have been in their BCIT program for your CPL, etc. As I was just saying to someone in another thread, the instructor jobs out west seem to ...

Well if by "just recently expired" you mean within the last 12 months, then you won't need Mr. Class 1 to sign a recommend for you.

Re: Renewing expired Instructor Rating-Schools Policy
If you don’t mind me asking, do you have an instructing job lined up? If not, then it might not be worth renewing. It seems that there are a lot of unemployed instructors and not a lot of job openings right now. I have a number of friends with instructor ratings who are getting very frustrated with ...
