Re: ADS-B

Not a controller but I've been told they get TAS, so pilots have to be a bit extra careful about being more than 5% off on their planned TAS as well as with crossing restrictions during a STAR

Re: INRAT Question

All TC written exams are valid for 2 years including the INRAT. There is a weird work-around on ATPL exams but that still requires getting a PPC within 2 years.

TLDR, 2 years, yes.

Re: Chinese immigrants want to be pilot

Your best bet might be to go the flight instructor route. WWFC might be a good place to start asking questions.

Seneca college often advertises part-time contract flight instructors as well.

Multi engine airplane or level C or D simulator. Flight Training devices (FTDs) don’t count if that helps.

Re: Steep turns

Nowhere did I say not to perform an effective lookout. :smt102

My point was that the attitude, specifically when it comes to pitch is what makes the difference on an effective steep turn and the reason I felt the OP was having an issue with altitude control.

Re: Class 4 YYC

Before Covid, the Calgary Flying Club and Springbank Air Training College were having such a hard time churning out Class 4 Flight Instructors that Class 1 flight instructors were not allowed to do anything other than instructor ratings. I recently heard that both places are starting to see a decent...

Re: Steep turns

I'd pay closer attention to where you are looking during the turn. Too often, I find that when the steep turn isn't going well, it is because the student is looking "ahead of the turn" like in a car, except in an airplane that is on the low side of the aircraft and at the ground. I recommend that yo...

Re: Class 3 Upgrade Application

You're only focusing on the negative aspect of this. The upside is you can ask/email multiple people at TC until one gives you the answer you're looking for. If you have it in writing, you're quite well protected. Except when you are assigned a POI who determines your fate. Why would your POI get i...

Re: Class 3 Upgrade Application

The alternative can actually be much worse. With the current set up you can contact a different region if the answer of one region is incorrect. In smaller countries, you often have one guy deciding pretty much everything, often straying away from what's legally required and interpreting it the way...

Re: Advice for New Instructors

There is no shame in not immediately knowing the answer to a question. Even after a decade of doing this I get the odd question that completely stumps me and I sit down and try to find the answer together with the student. I find that it gives them an idea on how to go about finding the answer while...

Re: Class 3 Upgrade Application

Maybe my anger on that post wasn’t justified but I stand by the opinion that there’s just way too many places to look for things and too many people to ask and get way too many varied opinions when dealing with TC. The alternative can actually be much worse. With the current set up you can contact ...

COPA has their in-house insurance run by Magnes and I’ve only heard good things about their policy. Possibly the only insurance policy that is completely open to you having people use your airplane by purchasing block time off you and fairly open and easy to satisfy policy requirements from my exper...

Re: Revolving Doors

Definitely FTUs! I saw Springbank flight schools barely able to keep up with churning out Class 4 instructors in 2019. On days when they saw a Class 4 ride being successful, they saw one or two instructors leave for a faster airplane. Class 1 flight instructors were pretty much only allowed to work ...

Re: Class 3 Upgrade Application

I find it highly irritating that some random inspector decides it is a certain way and then it suddenly becomes an unwritten rule. What happened to due process where they put out a circular or amend the CARs just so that it is known to everyone? I mean a proper AC, not just a paper circular sent out...

I would argue yes since they are beholden to both flight time and duty time limits when operating under either OC...

What if you recommended both tests? I keep hearing people say this but I couldn't seem to find it in the CARs. Is there some kind of circular about this?

Wow that’s a lot of flying in a year!
I have seen eager beaver instructors accrue that much or more in a year without breaking a sweat.
