Re: Diamond Crash

Sad and chilling, having done my PPL in a similar type. when the aircraft was at 5725 feet ASL, it entered the 1st of 2 spin manoeuvres. The aircraft recovered from the 1st spin at 1805:37, at an altitude of 4150 feet ASL and with a loss of 1575 feet. the aircraft entered the 2nd spin at 4725 feet A...

Re: Private License Cost

I've flown many, many lessons with part-time students where we've basically spent half the lesson kicking-off the rust from the two weeks of not flying previously. Nothing wrong with that if you're training for fun, but that extra time to re-learn and remember things can really add up. This was me,...

The Government of Canada is inviting comments from stakeholder groups on the 3-year targeted regulatory review process, beginning with the examination of regulatory requirements and practices in 3 key sectors: agri-food and aquaculture health/bio-sciences transportation and infrastructure Targeted ...

During my PPL I found a home simulator useful for practising the procedures of forced approaches. (e.g. panel checks, emergency calls, etc)

Re: Toronto to Niagara in 15 minutes

I hope this succeeds but lots of Niagara is not particularly well off (maybe just for now ... home prices are rising because of GTA spillover) ... regular GO train service is supposed to start in 2023 to Niagara Falls. I spend a lot of time in this area (it's also where I fly) so it's pretty excitin...

Re: The Economy Thread.

Does anyone think the government would do the same for Westjet if they needed help? They are putting maple leaves on the sides of their airplanes now... Or does history dictate there will only ever be one 'flag carrier'... I don't see why not, the feds have backstopped AC, BBD, and GM; unless they ...

Re: Your flight test

On its own, it shouldn't have: the soft field landing is a landing in a soft field, not a soft landing in a field. None of the criteria are specifically "no bounces". Minimizing the speed at touchdown, and holding the nose gear up under control, are. As long as you do those two, within reason land ...

Plenty of blame to go around, and whatever the problem is ain't gonna be solved today, or tomorrow, or even in this generation. One thing that needs to happen IMHO is the centralized negotiations between the groups "representing" first nations (e.g. AFN) and INAC, this country is too damn big to com...

Flying impressions - Piper Warrior vs Diamond Katana

Seems kind of slow around here so here's some plane talk. Recently did some circuits in a Piper Warrior to get back into flying. All my previous time was on a Katana. Walkaround: Piper is easier because you don't have to crank the prop to check the oil. Also there's no coolant to check and the engin...

Re: Getting better at flying...without flying?

As you've mentioned flying is a combination of book smarts and ongoing hand-eye coordination. I was in a bit of a same boat as you (book smart, some trouble with stick-and-rudder) and ended up spending a lot of money on practice flights. Problem is that of course "knowing" is only half the battle an...

Congrats K and hope you keep flying. I was frustrated with landings for a while but my instructor basically said it really just takes practice. As for flare height over the runway I only really got the hang of it (Barely) by doing glances out the side of the cockpit to basically see how high I was. ...

Re: Price of air travel- who's picking up the tab??

My question is, in a market that can clearly support, and has a necessity for air travel, why is it the employees that have taken all the concessions for cheaper air travel, when the price of a ticket hasn't even kept up with inflation? Considering the number of North American airlines which have g...

I suppose this would be an alternative to COPA? Suggestion : Perhaps the AVCANADA admins could set up a separate subforum called "Advocacy." Each thread would be dedicated toward a specific issue, and then people can chime in. Of course each issue would need an "owner" or "champion" who would needle...
