Re: Canadian National Soaring Championship

No problem. All you need is a week off and make your way out to Hawkesbury. You'll love soaring. On the good soaring days most of the club's pilots will launch just after 11:00 and they don't come back until 17:00. It won't take long and you can be doing the same thing. Our club also does mountain w...

Re: CANADIAN NATIONAL SOARING CHAMPIONSHIPS START TODAY

No problem. The course breaks down like this... Based on historic weather, we decided to run the course for four students at the end of May. The course was scheduled for seven days but we only needed four of them because the weather was great. To join the course the students had to become club and S...

Re: CANADIAN NATIONAL SOARING CHAMPIONSHIPS START TODAY

Hey single_swine_herder: I understand the issue you have with waiting around to go flying at the gliding clubs. I belong to the Montreal Soaring Council in Hawkesbury, Ontario (between Montreal & Ottawa on Hwy 17). We are a gliding club but... We ran our first "intensive" CPL/ATPL to GPL course at t...

Re: F-35 looking more like white elephant

US Navy doesn't want the F-35C eh?

http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/20 ... -navy.html

Sounds like it's now going to be the F/A-18E/F (and probably G) Super Hornet replacement.

Funny how things work?

Re: The ultimate glider tow plane and training glider?

I couldn't agree with you more about training on a conventional (tailwheel) aircraft. Pilots should be able to do both three point & wheel landings in order to be considered competent. To be fair, the Air Cadet Gliding Schools do not provide initial tailwheel training on the L-19s or Scouts. They on...

Re: The ultimate glider tow plane and training glider?

Well... The Air Cadet Gliding Program is where I got my start in aviation and even though I'm not involved anymore, I'm going to echo what some people are saying. The program trains approximately 320 cadets each year from across Canada to be licensed glider pilots. More than 22,000 cadets receive fa...

Re: The ultimate glider tow plane and training glider?

Hi Cat: First, I think what you are willing to do for the Air Cadet Gliding Program is nothing short of OUTSTANDING! As you can see, there's lots of ideas on which towplane/glider is best but here's how the program breaks down (at least for now). There are five gliding schools across Canada which op...

Re: Air Cadet Program = Hitler Youth?

If Mr. Bury is a reporter for the Star Phoenix he's a not very good one. His article has no research on the Cadet Program in Canada other than the fact he went to a farmer's market and something happened to him that he didn't like. At best, it's very poor reporting. Thank God so many of the finest p...

Re: Odd requirement for US ATPL?

I used to be an FAA Training Center Evaluator & Check Airman. I asked our Training Center Program Manager how do I evaluate/check candidates for "good moral character?" His response, "it's done by the results of section 18 v. on the FAA Medical Application Form." It's not done by the TCE or Check Ai...

Re: Odd requirement for US ATPL?

With regards to the FAA Certificate, being of "Good Moral Character" means you do not have a criminal record. It can (but not always) disqualify you from being issued an FAA medical which means your ATP certificate is no longer valid. The FAA can also revoke your medical/certificate based on a "chan...

Re: Ideal Glider Tow Plane?

I'm sorry to say, but I don't really think there's such a thing as one particular aircraft being the "Ideal Glider Tow Plane." It would depend on how much you're willing to spend to acquire it (used/new), what's reasonable for maintenance costs and how busy your gliding operation is. Then there's al...

Re: Gov't announces JSF purchase

My earlier comments aside, I do like the Lockheed-Martin F-35. In general, the F-35A will serve two roles for Canada (and please tell me if there's more). NORAD, where I see the F-35 as a good aircraft in the air defense role but maybe not as good as some of the other choices (Eurofighter Typhoon, F...

Re: Gov't announces JSF purchase

If Canada is buying the F-35A CTOL (like the USAF will fly). This aircraft doesn't use probe & drouge (like the USN & USMC) refueling but the aerial refueling boom (like the USAF). Will our F-35As be modified so they can be refueled by our Airbus CC-150s/CC-130s? The F-35C (the CV version) is equipp...

Burrard Air.

Ah the days when the Islander was the airline and of course, "morning, morning, morning."

Then there was Ed Green in dispatch. I still laugh when I think of him saying, "it's time we fire you pablum pukers and hired some real pilots" or "the keys are in the bus."

Re: Peter Shewring, Canadian aviation icon, passes on

I remember when four of us from Burrard Air did our ATPL course with Peter in 1989 and he made a comment about the INSs installed in the Burrard Air Chieftains. He poked fun at the four of us for the whole course. It was wonderful... I also remember him drawing a crooked line on the board and saying...
