Re: Is Buttonville Holding a Farewell Event?

Very fond memories of Buttonville. I got my PPL at Toronto Airways back in the last century.

I'm in Alberta now but knowing it would probably my last chance, I did make a special stop at CYKZ last time I flew out east.

Re: Diabetes paranoia - in desperate need of guidance

Of course you should go to you family doctor but it is not hard to do a preliminary check of your blood glucose levels yourself. Any pharmacy will sell you a lancet, a blood glucose meter and some test strips. Diabetes is not something to guess about and is normally quite manageable. If you are in f...

Not to excuse neglecting to check notams but...

How can you have equipment on an uncontrolled runway without someone at least having a hand held radio tuned to the local frequency?

Re: 300 nm CPL cross country

As photofly mentioned, it's supposed to be approved and under the supervision of your instructor. If you can get your current instructor to sign off on the flight then you're golden. Worst case go do another 300NM XC under your current instructor's supervision. You're going to need 20 hours of PIC ...

Re: Aerocourse ATPL ground school/seminar worth it?

Yes, but you should know the material somewhat going in. The course is primary to refresh your memory and focus what will be on the exam.

Also, you book your exams a few days apart IMMEDIATELY after the course before you forget it all.

Re: Can I leave the plane while waiting on CANPASS?

I had a nap on the wing once waiting for US customs....Was too hot to sit inside. While in the airplane with the door open, I was once told by US customs that I wasn't supposed to open the door until they arrived. ...on a hot summer day, parked on black asphalt, in a pressurized airplane without an...

Re: Next Rating

I am not a career pilot myself but I think a good pilot should always be training. Without any specific need, I ended up with an ATPL-A and a CPL-H. Personally, I am biased towards the instrument rating as I think that is the one most likely to save your life. Multi-engine really isn't a big deal, y...

Re: Okanagan Mountain Helicopters

I don't have any specific knowledge of them but...because you mentioned a turbine endorsement I will say that many (?most?/?all outside of the training environment?) believe that a turbine endorsement with a fresh 100 hour CPL-H has little value and that when one is needed, your employer will pay fo...

Re: Toronto Hospital 70% Unvaccinated

... First off, I am far from a statistician. I've had to use modelling and population economics in the past in some genetics studies, but stats can be utterly bonkers to try and reign in the more levels you add. You know the expression about stats! ... I am, at least was trained as, a statistician ...

Re: How useful is the VFR OTT rating?

Personally, I went straight for the instrument rating. Just my opinion but a VFR OTT can put you into some ugly situations.

However, it does depend somewhat on what/where you fly. The greater the speed/range of what you fly, the more useful it can be.

I have no clue where he is currently but a Max Wieb was my examiner for my private way back in 1990 at CYKZ. We barely fit in the C-152 together. Possibly the same person?

I have heard estimates of $70K + $100/hour (USD).

I would wait for Starlink to figure out a solution.

Chartering is not flying. Is there a place in Canada where I can rent a helicopter, go somewhere, spend a few hours or the night, and come back at night or the next day? As far as I know. No. I have heard of a few places in the US but rare there as well. Flying helicopters really requires a certain...

Co-ownership with a group of like minded people to split the cost of the aircraft and maintenance. There’s people that co-own private helicopters in Canada? ... For the average well off joe. I know a guy that started one of Canada’s largest operators with a Bell 47 that he bought with the money he got from selling his truck. It is my understanding that there are only 2-3 insurers left for helicopters in Canada. My insurance went up 50% in each of the last 2 years and I am considered lucky. I have no clue what's going to happen at this years renewal but it will probably be ugly. I don't see how you are going to get a lic...

Just wondering if this seems reasonable to those who have done it before. Yes, write the exams before eve...

Re: ASA CX3 flight computer or cellphone app?

The E6B's are "slide rules" from the last century. ... Actually AT LEAST 2 centuries ago. In fact, the E6B in it's current form was developed in the 30's. So the wiz wheel is between 80 and 90 years old, a far cry from 2 centuries. I was referring to "slide rules" invented sometime in the 1600's.
