Re: 407 Landing?
Why couldn't he make the runway from the base leg? "The pilot discontinued attempts to restart the engine and concentrated on carrying out a forced approach to land on highway 407 about one mile southeast of the runway threshold . Thankfully it turned out ok, but here's a real life example of what ...

Runway is 2100 X 30 http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=44.407527,-79.729521&spn=0.0063,0.018754&t=h&z=16 I was on my second approach on 07 with a gusty crosswind from the North. My approach was a constant 80mph and crabbing into the wind with 25 degrees of Flap. What is the aircraft type /...

Re: Training to use the radio
Some examples of what I consider standard industry practice are as follows ( in no particular order) 1) call sign at the front of transmission for "you to ATC" and at the end for your reply to "ATC to you" transmissions Are you saying that the following is "industry standard" ? : "Golf Alpha Bravo ...

Re: Over-square piston power settings
Another topic .... When transitioning to constant-speed props, pilots are taught the simplistic rule that the throttle manifold pressure in inches of Hg should not be higher than the prop RPM. Like training wheels on your first bicycle, they were good when you started out, but after a while you did...

This might be of interest to your pilot friend : http://www.pprune.org/tech-log/278891-origin-mp-rpm-square-rule.html There are some fantastic articles in the Lycoming Flyer reprints that are available for sale or to view on the web at the Lycoming site. They do have a short article that might be of...

Re: My Experience
I don't have any experience with the "supervised ground school". Transport Canada and / or your flight school should have the info for you on how it works. The list of docs you posted should have you covered. "From The Ground Up", will cover most of the material. In addition you'll need to study the...

Re: My Experience
Yah you gotta watch those sims .. probably fine for IFR simulation but not very useful for VFR or just basic flying skills which involve actually using many more senses than just what you see out the window. You can tell so much about what your plane is doing just by the force it counter acts your ...

Re: My Experience
I have a huge hate on for MS Flight Sim because of the unintended effect it has on people starting flight training. FS doesn't fly like a real aircraft and worse it encourages flying by looking at the instruments instead of by looking out the windshield. If you cannot judge the orientation of the a...

Re: Crash at CYKZ May 25 2010
I very distictly remember once with an owner pilot where if he was by himself he would have piled us in, I took it from him and he squealed "but my engine!" I said back to him "BUT THOSE TREES!" What happened ? Wild guess : Climb out / departure, he reduced power so as not be "over-square" :/ ? Mike

Re: Crash at CYKZ May 25 2010
I am NOT attempting to speculate, but I do want to say.. Please, if you ever are unfortunate enough to have an engine failure in a single engine plane..please RESIST the temptation to try to turn back. Your stall speed increases dramatically in an engine out steep turn and you will NOT make it. The...
