Re: A Boeing 777 Has Crash-Landed At San Francisco Internati
I think I'm almost at 40 hours. Maybe something like 39.1. Anyways, my instructor has drilled into me since hour 1 that I must have the proper airspeed on final, or things start getting messy. I won't comment on this crew as I have no clue what it's like to fly a wide-body jet, but even with all the...

Windows Phone GPS recommendation
I have a Windows Phone (7.5) and I was wondering if anyone out there has a recommendation for a good in-flight GPS for such a device (app).
Merci,

As The Rock would say: Know your role, Jabroni. As with every single other company in the world, if you are on salary (or paid per hour, or whatever), no one cares about you. The CEO answers to the Board of Directors who is responsible to ensure that the company is being ran to create the most value...

think i posted this elsewhere as well but sounds like a different twist of "entre terre et ciel" (story of captain piché from transat). i know piché wasn't under the influence at the time of the incident but still... sounds like the same movie. i'll watch it though... denzel.

Re: Ottawa small plane crash. No injuries.
Honest question: Any reason we can't find out what happened CS? I have about 18-20h, so I am in no position to judge anyone, but I don't plan on dying soon so I have a keen interest in accident causes so I can try and avoid the same pilot errors? If it is a stupid error, what's the point in not sayi...

Re: Look Outside
Yeah, I was taught trim for 60-65 (depending on conditions, adding more if it's gusting, etc.) and when you are trimmed for the speed just keep the same "assiette" (picture out the front) and the speed will stay the same - I must admit I do cheat and look at the ASI a little bit but I wouldn't say I...

I haven't fully developed the "feel" for centering the ball... I am getting better but still need that instrument. You can feel it primarily with your butt, just apply a little more rudder on whichever cheek is feeling more pressure against the seat. This is exactly where the term, "Flying by the s...

Re: Look Outside
I'm not sure how many hours I have but it's somewhere between 15 - 20 (I've soloed). I guess I am one of the lucky few who has an instructor who has always taught me to look outside all the time. In French we call it "l'assiette". I am sure there is an equivalent term in English but it basically ref...

Re: Flight (Staring Denzel Washington)
Looks like the English version of Michel Côté's "Entre Ciel et Terre" about Captain Piché from Air Transat and the flight he landed in the Azores.... Anonymous pilot, emergency, saves the aircraft + people on board, becomes famous, problems uncovered about pilot.... Anyways, I'm a huge Denzel fan so...

Re: Bank Angle In The Circuit
Colonel: you stated in huge letters and bolded : "80 and ball". So my instructor taught me 70 (kts) and ball, i.e., the exact same thing you just said. You're just making it seem that flying shallow turns in the circuit is bad (sorry if that's not your intention - I get the point, you CAN bank hard ...

Re: Bank Angle In The Circuit
What matters in the turns is NOT keeping the bank angle low, but maintaining airspeed and keeping the ball centered. This is what I was taught. I would say I generally use about 20 degrees of bank (so I guess shallow) because that is what feels comfortable. I have never experienced 60 degrees of ba...

Re: Flight Training around the GTA
For what it's worth I have dealt with a Class 3 and Class 4 and both were amazing teachers. I have no class 1 / 2's to compare them with because I only have experience with those two instructors but both were awesome (class 3 and class 4). The class 4 was a younger guy but very very professional. He...

@ trampbike: Yeah, yesterday I went to St-Jean and got to practice a lot. Funny because when I got back to CYHU we had to extend our downwind all the way to almost Mont St-Bruno so it just confirmed that going away from CYHU is the right thing to do. @ METEO: I just checked my bill from yesterday an...

Re: CYHU - Now charging landing fees for touch & go's... wtf
Aren't there any other nearby airports you can do touch+gos? Yes, Beloeil, St-Jean, come to mind. They're about 5-10min (each-way), though. Doesn't sound like much, but 5-10 min x 2 = 10-20 min x $130/h (plus instructor) = $$$ In response to the poster above, I'm pretty sure it's not the school try...

CYHU - Now charging landing fees for touch & go's... wtf?!!
Hi all, I am doing my PPL at CYHU. The school is at CYHU, which is a controlled airport, and we pay $9.99 (i believe - it's either 9.99 or 9.95) landing fees. It is kind of irritating, but it is the closest airport to my house, it's convenient, and the school is great. This morning the CFI sent all ...

I dream of a system that works like this (and I'm sure I'm oversimplifying): Escalated tax rates depending on income, at the same % we currently have, but the amount of "tax" paid is divided into two categories: 1) "traditional tax" - i.e. tax we currently pay... to the government... so half of your...

Wow... is being a pilot that fun? At 21 years old, after completing my accounting degree, I worked as an auditor for $35k. I found the pay sucked for the hours we worked. Never less than 40 CHARGEABLE hours, often more like 50-60. Oh yeah, I paid about, hum, let me calculate now, for my "license" (B...
