Re: Help me with a SAMRA question!!!
The key to this question is the Temperature. We know that a HIGH has descending air, AKA Subsidence, and the temperature increases. We also know that a LOW has ascending air, AKA Ascendance, and the temperature decreases. Therefore, in this example, we will have a LOW to the NW, and a HIGH to the SE...

Re: Advice for New Instructors
Asking questions is a key component of good instruction - see the FIG. I agree with you it is not good to prevent the student from ever doing anything. But I am not advocating for this. I am advocating for instructors to be present for the preflight inspection. And to teach by asking questions. Do y...

Re: Advice for New Instructors
The point I am making is the rarity of accidents should not negate being cautious. And as for types of scenarios I am worried that having both the PIC instructor plus the ab initio student pilot should complete the walk around together would be a good idea is the infamous "running out of fuel in tra...

Re: Advice for New Instructors
Just curious, what ab-initio licence takes 40 - 50 dual flights?
And if you have an ab-initio student at 40 - 50 dual lessons, then you should be really, really careful for sure.
Do accidents happen alot, not really. So why not ditch the pre-flight altogether?

Re: Advice for New Instructors
ALWAYS do the aircraft pre-flight inspection with your student. I can't believe how often I see senior flight instructors leaving the pre-flight inspection to the "lowly" student all alone, as if it is beneath the instructor's time and effort. The pre-flight is really important. Instructors should u...

Re: ATPL exams
Yes you can do this. First get your Cat 1 Medical (if you have not already done so), then sit the SAMRA, SARON and INRAT exams. You will also have to do an IFR flight test in a light twin. Here is TC's summary of the process: "To successfully earn a Canadian ATPL-A, you must: Complete medical examin...

Re: Spin Recovery Altitude
"Cite" vs. "site" vs. "sight". They all sound the same but each means something different and are not interchangeable.
As for spin recovery, we use the recommended height in the POH or 2,000 feet AGL, whichever is higher.

Re: Steep Turns At Low Altitude
I personally knew a 3,000+ hour pilot that lost his life in a low altitude steep turn. He was a wonderful person and a highly skilled pilot.
So I would urge all pilots here to be really, really cautious with low altitude steep turns and if you are afraid of doing them, all the better.

Re: IFR Comm Failure before Approach - NIZUS Question
What reference(s) is/are provided by the authors for this particular question? Most exam prep's will have some kind of reference system so the user can source the background material for their questions. It enhances the authority of their product. Or is this not the case with NIZUS, and they just di...

Re: ISA Deviation Question at Altitude
Aha - now everything makes sense. AeroCourse is really 2 products, their questions workbook, plus their seminar. If you use their workbook only, without purchasing their seminar, then, if you want to know and understand the material, you must research the background subjects, using alternate sources...

Re: ISA Deviation Question at Altitude
High level performance charts are typically laid out on the basis of ISA temperature deviation. So you work this out first, then look to the chart. In this question the fact that the Tropopause is higher and colder than ISA is certainly interesting to note, but not essential to working out the ISA t...

Re: Spins before solo?
The precept of the initial question seems ridiculous. If you follow the line of reasoning to the end, and come to the conclusion that there is nothing definitive in CARs mandating stall-spin training, does that mean you should throw it out the window? Stall-spin awareness and recovery training is so...

Re: Spins before solo?
As far as I know Exercise 13 has been then since the dawn of time, and is still there. I'm trying to work out what rule is broken if a student flies a first solo before completing it. Why bother trying to determine the formal existence of such a rule when we all follow it in practice, regardless? S...

Re: Calculating time required with Mach and reported winds?
I am having trouble figuring out the calculation for this question; The following wind report relates to a WESTBOUND flight of a small business jet aircraft: 274045 How long would this aircraft take to cover a distance of 150 NM if it cruised at .83 Mach? a) 31 mins b) 25 mins c) 20 mins d) 17 mins...

Re: The personal log book thing.
I read the regulation as requiring that you maintain a personal logbook, but only for the purposes of acquiring a licence/rating or for currency. So what you must log depends on your situation. If you are PPL and you never intend on ever carrying passengers or getting any further licences or ratings...

The holding speeds were recently revised by TC as per current AIM.
You are probably remembering the old rules which have now changed; any source that is more than about 2 years old will be based upon the old rules.

Re: New Flight Duty Times - Written Exams
I would not be concerned yet - if you go to the Justice Laws Canada website they are still using the old version of the flight duty rules under Part VII: https://lois-laws.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-96-433/FullText.html#s-700.13 So until the CARs themselves have been updated for the new rules...

For me, this forum is like a saloon in a wild west gold town. It is often rough and wild, with many of those having something to...
