Re: The Wrong Way to Teach Force Landings

You know what, this, more than any other kind of thread, really pisses me off. Instructors and FTUs: You're all doing it all wrong. You're all stupid. You're all incompetent, uninterested in your students' success, lazy, unthinking, worthless good-for-nothings. Not a single flight school gets this r...

Re: The Wrong Way to Teach Force Landings

Start your own then. Lead by example and show everyone how it should be done. It would make a better impression than sniping from the sidelines. Then you can say "At the FTU where I'm CFI, we teach this ... and this ... and this .."

Re: The Wrong Way to Teach Force Landings

We should be training how to avoid the failure in the first place before it quits. Spending a lot of time training how to avoid the failure in the first place is not a substitute for training how to deal with a failure that has occurred. I think it's an error to consider "how to avoid an engine fai...

Re: The Wrong Way to Teach Force Landings

Could you put your thoughts to how to rewrite the stated aims of the forced approach exercise in the PPL and CPL flight tests better to suit your improved training goals? How much of your critique is due to a badly drafted flight test guide, and how much is due to instructors misinterpreting that gu...

Re: Definite Stall/Spin Accident

^ that's exactly the position of the elevator on the C152 when the control lock is in. Ailerons too. But the control lock is on the yoke and relies on the cable path to the tail maintaining its integrity. It's also a stretch to assume that the control cable path to the elevator wasn't damaged on im...

A go around with uncorrected nose trim fully up would do this….especially with flaps down.
Doesn't look fully nose-up:

Re: Definite Stall/Spin Accident

FWIW, I"m not sure it actually stalled. There's no pitch drop or wing drop; it appears mostly to yaw to the left. Control lock theory: the pilot doesn't deflect the rudder, either, and that's not constrained by the lock on the yoke. Do 150s suffer from unintended seat roll-back like 172s and 182s? ...

Re: Definite Stall/Spin Accident

Worth reminding ourselves that this aircraft is a 152 - lesser maximum flap extension than a 150, and more power.

This photograph (Montreal gazette) shows the elevator matching the locked position (as far as I recall): https://smartcdn.gprod.postmedia.digital/montrealgazette/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/cp167845045.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=944&h=708&type=webp&sig=9A2dd6_Ck8okpgYcvf5JPw This one shows the rudder...

Re: Freelance CFI - searching for one in area

Option to use my plane or pay to train on your plane on a flexible schedule, The first option is legal, the second one is most likely illegal. You can't train on a freelance instructor's personal airplane (with some exceptions that don't apply here). It's really not clear that to "build time, focus...

Re: Freelance CFI - searching for one in area

My issue is the nearest formal flight school is a bit of a commute for me and I'd prefer a freelance person I think over a 'school' for building my time. The quality of instruction depends mostly on the quality of the instructor, not whether they work for a school or freelance. If you want good ins...

Your right to a review of a failed PPC is not extinguished by passing a subsequent PPC

https://www.canlii.org/en/ca/tatc/doc/2022/2022tatce52/2022tatce52.html This pilot failed a PPC on December 14, 2021. On December 21 he took and passed a subsequent PPC. Transport Canada tried to argue that because he passed the second test, he was no longer able to appeal the result of the first te...

10 HRS Flight training required, if you do the groundschool online I believe the provider can supply the letter of recommend in order to take the written. The 10 hours requirement has been reduced to 5 hours under NCR-033-2022 until November 17, 2027, and this change is being made permanent in a fo...

Re: Applying ATPL with converted CPL from FAA

There are no credits for foreign applicants for the ATPL in CAR 421. All Canadian ATPL holders must have completed the INRAT, SARON and SAMRA exams, as listed in CAR 421.34(3). This is also confirmed at the following page for foreign pilots: https://tc.canada.ca/en/aviation/licensing-pilots-personne...

Re: IFR avionics TSO for homebuilts

One reason why non-approved GPS's aren't allowed to be used for approaches is that they don't switch the CDI automatically from en-route to terminal to approach mode (0.3nm fsd) and then back to terminal mode in the missed approach. Does your father's handheld GPS even drive (or have) a CDI? A CDI ...
