Re: Superior Airways
Amazing how little some places change. The base at sioux lookout is immediately recognizable. I'm sure the areas of the photo that you can't see are a world apart from the view today, but what little you can see is virtually unchanged. There is even a 180 currently sitting on the ramp waiting to mak...

This website has two training modules developed by NASA about ground icing and icing in flight. It was made primarily for aircraft that can accept flight into known icing conditions but if you want to learn more they are a great resource.

Re: Slipping 172 with full flaps
My opinion on this argument is that Cessna left vague a safety consideration that refers to a specific situation and I believe we're arguing 2 totally different situations; forward slips for altitude loss and side slips for crosswind correction. In a forward slip, to lose as much altitude as possibl...

#3 is merely what one does in a tailwheel aircraft, doing a wheel landing in a crosswind. Can some young instructor here explain to me how landing a tailwheel aircraft in a crosswind violates your insurance?! I would dearly love for some of those young instructors to respond here, and tell me what ...

Re: Iran unveils new stealth fighter!
Someone may have to explain to the Iranians that simply calling something "stealth" or "radar evading" does not make it so. You better watch it. Some iatollah will declare a fatwa on your ass for blasphemies like that. :D I have a radar-evading Toyota Corolla SS (SuperStealth), they'll never find m...

I'm pretty sure I'd be getting out but maybe they had the right idea. Did the phone call lead to them dispatching the boat that fished them out? The Hudson this time of year isn't exactly Waikiki beach people. How long before you are hypothermic? While I've heard it's a nice way to go... I really h...

Extremely sad news, it's clear the crew was well loved in the small world that is aviation.
My condolences to the family and friends of those involved.

Re: To de-ice or not to de-ice !?
You were completely right. Ice has to be removed from critical surfaces if present. Even on the big guys, the only allowable frost is within a clearly marked area on the wing where the fuel tank is. Any other contamination legally has to be removed before the aircraft can fly

Re: SUV Collides with Aircraft on Approach
The plane was not too low on approach. There is no rules saying at what height you must be crossing that fence. It does not matter if he needed to add a ton of power to make it or not, he did nothing wrong. Actually, as both J31 and I_Heart have pointed out, he was way low on approach - at first I ...

Re: Newer C-172SP?
They aren't that bad to start when they're hot, but they can flood easily. Flooded start procedures cure that quickly. As to how it flies, the S model aircraft i've been around have always shown a desire to remain airborne. Even the forward slip with 30* on doesn't produce a loss of altitude in too ...

Re: "Solo" Flight Time definition
Not to throw the discussion off track, but there was a brief period in the early 60's that a flying school in northern ontario was authorized to send instructors on duty with students to fly a solo xc. There had been many issues with students getting lost in the area of Armstrong and Sioux Lookout. ...

Re: Side Slip, or Slipping
A wonderful way to get rid of excessive energy is the slipping turn onto final, where more than normal bank is used, and "top" rudder is used to stop the aircraft from turning. This presents the inside of the fuselage as a speed brake. Nice post. I am trying to.imagine the.orientation of the aircra...

Re: Side Slip, or Slipping
Also, slipping in this scenario is not used to slow down an approach. A side slip is most commonly used to keep the aircraft pointed straight down the runway in crosswind conditions. A forward slip (heavier use of rudder and bank) is used to lose altitude in a hurry when cutting power or adding flap...

Re: Expectation when arriving at an FBO?
Where I train, our flights are generally unannounced (little prep required for a 172). In Winnipeg in particular the service is excellent. even with our 172's we get red carpet treatment, nose wheel chocked, windshield cleaned if we ask nice and a drive to the nearest fast food establishment before...

We had one on the ramp in my area recently; they are a nice looking airplane but do they all make that high pitched whine after start up? This particular one was so high pitched and so loud I thought all the glass in the area was going to fracture.

My grandfather, John Peacock, was a Superior Airways pilot around those times as well. I've heard many stories from his time working for O.J. Wieben. He also just recently published his book "Sourdough Pilot", which contains many stories and pictures from his time there. From him: I worked for OJ Wi...
