Re: Affordabilty of Housing as a Pilot
Interesting numbers.... I helped my brother buy a single family home that was 26 years old in southern YYC close to Fish Creek Park for $180k...., we sold it in 2006 for 410k.... I remember the people who first walked in to view it with the realtor said yes in under ten minutes.... having a good ide...

Re: Affordabilty of Housing as a Pilot
Wanted to add: each promotion and advancement in rank and income never affected or altered our standard of living.... As mentioned earlier: "one of the keys to happiness is being content with less".... So very true... My family enjoys many simple yet basic pleasures, and is very content with less an...

Re: Affordabilty of Housing as a Pilot
Good question, and good that you are starting to think about such things at this stage of your career... for myself, I always planned my career from the begining to be on international and domestic contracts where housing is paid for... I didn't have to start renting until I was 7 years into my care...

Re: Dash-8 question
The reason that the pilots feather one engine during ground taxi is to save fuel. The specific fuel burn with an engine in feather is significantly less than if it was not feathered. Over time such procedures render a significant overall fuel savings. This is true for both legacy Dash 8 aircraft (10...

Re: Experience Level of current new hires
It seems that WJ does create a nice mix of experience/background in all the hiring rounds... I still have faith that my 10 years of left seat Q400 experience, education, and character will catch WestJet's attention for Encore at some point.... not to mention my experience in post production Q400 acc...

Hi Gilles, Just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work on highlighting this problem.... I feel for my AT brothers and sisters who are now on EI while foreigners come to Canada..... it's just not right. Have you given any thought to organizing an aviation lawyer to take the government to task...

Dave,
Thanks for taking the time from your holidays to get back to me! That's pretty cool to be able to ask you these questions and actually get a first hand response.
Enjoy the holidays and I hope you are getting in some fun time on a Beaver!
Cheers

Hi Dave and Gina, I would like to ask what weight/value you place on previous Q400 PIC experience for the new regional division? Will having previous experience on the Q400 help somebody make it into the 'short listed' pool of candidates or, will it not play any significant role in selection criteri...

Re: Question regarding pilot recruitment and the new website
Good job on the new website! I got all excited when I saw the email from Gina... 8) I have been away flying floats, finally back at home for a short break, so I took the time to update my profile and apply for the pilot position! Here's hoping!! Anyways, best of luck to all who apply!! Fly safe out ...

Thanks for the updates Dave, I really hope WJ takes the Q400... She is an amazing machine! Am currently on sabatical from 10 years on the Q400 as a DEC; currently flying as a Captain o...

Ahh PAT.... seems like a lifetime ago I cruised the west coast with her! PAT was a special bird... not so heavy being an early build Otter. I will have to go and see her next time I am in YYC!

To all my teal toned brethern and sisters: You are on the verge of a historical and prescedent setting decision. Re: ATR versus Dash
Depends which Dash 8 version you are comparing the ATR product to. I know that over here in Europe we evaluated the ATR family of aircraft and the performance difference was astonishingly lower than the Dash 8 300 series with the extended 10 minute MTOP option. What was established was that with ici...

Q400
If WJ wants reliability, efficiency and capacity then the Q400 is the answer. I can highly recommend the Q400, she is overpowered and an absolute joy to fly, both as a pilot and as a passenger. I should know after 10 years on the bird! Too be honest, the Q400 is a profit generator when correctly ope...

Thanks Mike! I appreciate you taking the time to answer me. Over here in Europe we have contractual obligations that can be anywhere between 3 months to 6 months long. Re: Has anyone here converted their Canadian ATPL to a JAA A
I obtained my JAR ATPL after years of hard work, sweat and tears... I made each exam a clean pass on the first round. I studied for over two years straight. If you want it that badly, you will do it; however, I wouldn't waste my time writing these exams if you do not hold a valid and current EU pass...

Re: Battle lines being drawn over YHC Seaplane Terminal
In reference to Apollo's post on the previous page: When I used to fly UTW, I was always told if she sinks and takes the entire dock with her then no problem; if she get blown away and the floats are still moored to the dock then no problem... I don't understand how somebody didn't see this happenin...

Reciprocal jumpseat
Just out of curiosity, does WJ offer jumpseats to foreign flightdeck crew who are in uniform and carry valid airline ID? I am planing on being in YYZ next month and might need a ride home to Alberta if I can find one. I tried AC last time without success.
Thanks.
