Re: Speed below 10,000'
No Incorrect. Civilian ATC can issue whatever speed they need you to fly at, and further, you can request whatever speed you'd like. Whether you get a request approved depends. "Other than Military" is a statement that is a little misleading, as military aircraft aren't able to ignore this rule all...

Re: Head position in turns
Can someone tell me what is the correct head position to maintain during a turn? I'm interested especially in steep turns. My instructor told me you have to maintain your head perpendicular to longitudinal axis of the airplane but I heard instructors say it is necessary to tilt your head opposite t...

Re: Captains are not allowed to make decisions anymore......
Yes. Absolutely, one could do a ground based instrument approach such as NDB, VOR or ILS. However, if the airport is not in the database, they might not have any approach charts for that airport on the aircraft. So, that could complicate issues if you are trying to go to your alternate and organize...

I don't think there is any point reasoning with you anymore.... ...SUPER DRINK-OFF!!!! (ahem) With all due respect Rockie, summarizing AuxBatOn's arguments and expertise with a one-liner like "he just wants a shiny new toy," is pretty shallow. It shows bias, and stubbornness. I know for a fact and ...

Re: F-35 looking more like white elephant
Well it would seem that the extra cost of extending the existing CF18's would be solely due to the fact that Lockheed can't deliver the F 35 before the current end of service date. It is a fact that any existing gen 4.5 fighter could be delivered well before the CF18 retirement therefore I think it...

Re: F-35 looking more like white elephant
AuxBatOn, is it just me or the DAS is too rarely mentionned when speaking about the F35 capabilities? I'd love to hear more about that system. There's a quick summary of what DAS will be for people who had no idea what is was: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1NrFZddihQ Trampbike you're 100% spot on...

Re: F-35 looking more like white elephant
The extra costs of the current Hornet fleet extension should be applied to the F 35 total program costs, but of course nobody wants to do that because it makes the already bad numbers for the Canadian F35 buy look worse. No. The extra costs of the current Hornet fleet extension should be applied to...

Nice work! Things only get bigger, better, and faster from here! Oh and I'll take you up on that offer! Jesus, my first solo was back in 2000. Did a couple of laps around the pattern at CYAM, then kicked my instructor out on the ramp and did 2 more before calling it a day. It was right at sunset; sm...

Re: >200 knots within 10 miles
Good point by snowbear, the current CAR ammendment was instituted to bring Canadian regs in line with ICAO. AFAIK the GPH204 airspeed rule has not been changed to reflect that of the current CAR's rule (and I don't know if it ever will be), so flying 350KCAS on departure isn't a problem. The way I s...

Re: Landing long while another aircraft is on the runway
Why is the military formation take-off and landing even brought into this equation? Yes they have multiple aircraft on the runway at the same time..all going in the same direction at the same time, all properly briefed and not the scenario put forward by the OP. I'd be glad to meet you over a beer ...

Re: Landing long while another aircraft is on the runway
I cannot think of a way to mitigate risks whilst allowing planes to land on the same runway. There is a very good reason only one airplane is allowed to use a runway at a time. There IS a way to increase efficiency, and it's called a second runway. But the military lands more than one aircraft on a...

Re: Landing long while another aircraft is on the runway
bodyflyer, I'll echo what a couple of posters here have said. Generally it's not a good idea, but if it's pre-arranged, or you can honestly and reasonably justify your actions, fill your boots. It's not a common practice from what I know of in the aviation industry, like as some other posters have m...

Re: Checklists...
If after 10 flights you still cannot operate your plane without the use of a checklist, you should probably revisit your career, imo. Amen. On a side note, I've always wondered who actually writes our checklist. For example, why would you ever wait to turn your INS on until after the flight control...

Re: F-35 looking more like white elephant
But you are right, the 404 doesn't normally just quit. In 2007, a fairly junior wingman on squadron got a big surprise when a whole LPT assembly departed the fix and severed a few hydraulic lines on the way out putting the FCS in DEL mode with a whole stab X'ed out on the FCS page. (I assume you fl...
