Re: Summit Ramp

My own random thoughts ... If you are worried about starting on the ramp for Summit, it going tits up and having nothing to show for X amount of time ... ummm yeah I wouldn't worry too much about it. The company is not the same company it was even a year ago, they seem to be moving in a different di...

Re: Canadian north to buy first air

Heard Ursus is buying both Canadian and First Air, Blair needs more Hygards in Tulita, figures they can land a -200 in there loaded, dont have to worry about getting them out, they're a dime a dozen :)

Re: PIC Under Supervision

250 hours PIC to meet the minimum does seem pretty low considering the license. Why not make it 500 hours PIC or even more? Then the debate would be the "quality" of the PIC time and that would open a whole new ugly can of worms. Let's start with (and folks please don't get your panties twisted, thi...

Re: ATPL

A little confused here about the breakdown (sliding rule for lack of a better term) for the 250 hrs PIC requirements: The CARs says " a maximum of 100 hours pilot-in-command under supervision flight time completed in accordance with Section 421.11... yadda yadda yadda" The AIM breaks it down with no...

Re: Moving to Yellowknife... Help please!

What Raven said is right, working the ramp doesn't require a spacesuit. A decent pair of insulated covies, Red Baron gloves and a balaclava will usually suffice, but when you're away from base on flights there's no such thing as too much cold wx gear .. you never know when you're going to be stuck i...

Re: Am I too old

I finished my flight training in 2000, age 32, spent the next few years in debt so deep I couldn't afford the entry level jobs in the biz. Perseverance (or stupidity) eventually got me my first PPC in 2006, age 38. Was it worth the wait? Maybe, Maybe not. Would I do it over again? Maybe, maybe not, ...

Re: Excel Formula Help Part 2

Thanks Louis .. I actually stumbled on to that site in my search and tried the formula but being a complete TOOL I was unable to make it work for me, too many "if"s for my limited Excel know-how. I'll have another go at it tonight.

Excel Formula Help Part 2

I'm working on a Flight Planning spreadsheet and be damned if I can find a formula for spitting out a Groundspeed given True Course, TAS, Wind Direction and Wind Speed. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm Googled out!

Thanks

Kinda off topic but along the lines of what xs said, now is the time to buy your gear in the US. I've wanted to get a decent pair of sunglasses for a while .. I was the "I'd buy 10 pairs of $20 sunglasses before I would buy a $200 pair" .. yeah, that changed as soon as I started flying above the clo...

I compared the Bose and the DC X-11 on the same flight, Bose wins hands down, better comfort, audio and noise cancelling. On a different flight I compared the Bose and I believe it was a Telex .. the Telex had better noise cancelling and audio but it was big and clunky, like wearing a helmet. I stil...

I've been thinking about getting into a Noise Cancelling headset for a while but wanted to try out a few before doling out the $$. Yesterday I borrowed a Dave Clark X11 from a friend for a flight, my Captain had the Bose. During the flight we swapped headsets (best to compare them under the same con...

Try Summit or North-Wright, I hear progression from ramp to right seat at both places is probably the fastest in the North.

Instructing is challenging? Are you saying it more challenging than say flying a medivac into short gravel strips on dark dirty nights with @#$! all for nav aids? More challenging than off-strip work? Float flying? yadda yadda yadda. More challenging than airline work? Maybe you're right, shit happe...

It's funny how times change. 2-3 years ago a 3000 hour instructor from down South came up North expecting to land a left seat turbine gig and basically was shown the door by the CP because the person had no real experience for Northern work and "you got an hour 3000 times". Fast forward 2-3 years. N...

Ummm, I haven't really researched it much but last time I checked there were not a whole lot of $100,000 flying gigs in Moncton ... that's not to say they don't exist (as I am sure the next post after this one will list every frickin' one of them) If you're willing to work for $12,500-$20,000 a year...
