Re: Would you do it if you could start over?
[quote="Dirty A"] I should note that my goal is to make it into the majors and I would be unsatisfied with anything less. You are not even a PPL yet and you are already making such statements. . . Why would you say that now as a 23 year-old looking to possibly get in the industry? There is certainly...

Commuting in Canada
Just wondering if there is a known statistic for how many airline pilots in Canada commute to work? I recall reading some time ago that in the US it was something like 60%? Is it similar here? And, when it comes to commuting how would you define it? For example, many pilots at AC live in Barrie and ...

Re: Encore WACON released and surprise, it sucks
Correct me if I'm wrong but these wages seem to be in line with companies such as PAL, CMA, Georgian, etc. . . IMHO WS Encore won't have any problem attracting candidates. WS corporate culture and the prospect of flow through will cause many young keen pilots, who are already making these wages or l...

Re: So snowgoose is "cool" now?
I agree. Canada Goose Parkas/Jackets have become way over priced because, as mentioned already, they are fashion statements. Go to the Canada Goose website and take a look at the different models available and the selection of colours. I've even seen pink Canada Goose Bomber Jackets (Chilliwack) on ...

Re: Cost of Living vs. Wages
Also stated that many products: meats, Veg, Bread etc..., have all gone up 30-60% since 2002. I was surprised by these figures to be honest, and I do understand that there is inflation and that prices do rise, but in 10 years for things to double?? Wow! Don't be mistaken here, this is not a doublin...

Cost of Living vs. Wages
Was watching the News last night and saw a report on how the cost of food will be going up yet again in 2013. Also stated that many products: meats, Veg, Bread etc..., have all gone up 30-60% since 2002. I was surprised by these figures to be honest, and I do understand that there is inflation and t...

I believe that is was some rotational Twin Otter Captains as well as rampie's with some FO's moving to the ramp. Not sure of the numbers though.

Re: Polar Flights
Grid Navigation is used in Antarctica by the U.S. Air Force, Air Guard and KBA aircraft on U.S.A.P contracts operating in to U.S. bases. South Pole Station ski-way for example is on a Grid heading of 020 degrees. On approach an aircraft would be crossing several lines of Longitude in a matter of sec...

Flight School Enrolment
For those of you in the know I am interested to find out how flight schools across the nation are doing in terms of student enrolment? More specifically Canadian students who are signing up to become commercial pilots and eventually get their ATPL? Not recreational Private pilots or foreign students...

Was Interesting to see the new Rampie in YHY pack up and leave after such a short time. Also, to see the new female Rampie show up in YZF for a try-out in sneakers and bare hands. Probably didn't expect to be thrown to the wolves so quickly and actually have to get on a flight and go north. I unders...

Re: Ydf commute
I don't fly for WS but I do live on the east coast. I know a former PAL pilot who flies for WS and commutes from YYT. He loves working for WS but not the commute. It is doable as mentioned above, but not without issues. Flights from YYT are full a lot of the time and then throw in the weather delays...

Re: Westjet pilot bases - YUL?
I was just doing some math. Let's assume the pay is 80% of Jazz. This works out to: $90 for a senior captain, $62 for a junior captain, $57 for a senior FO and $34 for a junior FO (Does AC still pay their new guys this much?) Not great, but profit share will top that up a bit. And there is a decent...

Re: Porter to WS Encore. . .
Yes you are correct. I'm not saying that WS Encore will only hire Q400 pilots. I am not that naive. However, in the initial start-up phase it would probably make more sense to have current and experienced Q400 captains flying the line whether from Porter, Sky Regional, or Jazz. I would be more surpr...

Porter to WS Encore. . .
When it comes to pay, benefits, corp-culture, and morale; any current Porter pilots on here believe a move to WS Encore to be just a lateral move? I understand that a chance to move up to mainline on the 737 or another base (who knows where yet) would be strong selling points, but other than these p...

Re: Caravan captain or Metro F/O?
I agree somewhat with tube driver and I don't think it was a "Terrible Post". I'm into my 24th year of aviation, 40 something years old, 13,000 + hours, and I've flown several types of aircraft for various 703, 704, and 705 operations throughout Canada and the world. No jet time, but I have worked f...

Re: getting a flying job these days !
I agree that some time on the ramp is useful towards becoming a better co-pilot/pilot. Through my own personal experience, especially working in Yellowknife, where many come to work the ramp, the transition to a pilot seat is more seamless and actually easier on the pilot candidate in most respects....

Livery Change. . .
Just curious if any of you working at WestJet have heard if the company will someday change/update its livery? Or, will they just leave well enough alone? I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with the current one, but many airlines over there years have freshened up or some what modernized th...

Re: New Contract thread
Compared to most flying Jobs in Canada this is still pretty good IMHO. Especially if you're in your late 20's - mid 30's and don't mind living in Toronto or close by and able to commute without too much stress. However, if you are older and more established with a family and have a home in an more p...

The Bond at VAL is not really a Training Bond. . . It's more of an Employment Bond. They are more interested in you staying for a year. Yes, the cost of training is an issue, but not he main concern. They invest time and resources in getting you set up to work in the various locations they fly. Even...

Re: Flight Crew Positions Voyageur
I interviewed at Voyageur in the summer of 2009. At the time I was Dash 8 current with 500+ hours in the left seat. After not hearing anything back for over month on how I did in the interview, I called to see what was going on. They said I was in a hiring pool and that if a position came up that su...

Well done guys ( gals?) Worthy of posting the crew names if any one knows them. -73!! Damn - makes "Ice Pilots" look like a tropical show. That's still only -58C. I saw that many times living up in northern Canada and colder. Not saying it's pleasant but it still happens in Canada often enough. Man...
