It was actually "Keep alert, and watch for other aircraft". Some of the funnier pilots would ask "What's a Lert?"

I've never heard of this happening, nor have I heard discussion of it, in the FSS world.

As for the original question. Some ATC trainees take a shot at the FSS world with the intention of getting more aviation experience and then trying ATC again in the future.

Re: Etiquette with gift to OJI upon checkout

it's as if some of you guys are making it sound like it's not allowed, or at least, not a good idea. If anyone got that impression from my comments I apologize. I never intended to make it seem it was verboten. I personally would not want a gift but I'd choke down a donut or three with a large blac...

I don't think anyone is being salty or are making a big deal of this subject but then I have a tendency to read the posts as if we were sitting in a lunch room having a conversation. Sure, some ribbing and gentle mocking take place but it isn't personal. How could it be, most everyone here is anonym...

Re: Keystone 2015 report

I had a conversation with a fueler that revolved around the "turbo" issue. His stance was that because a turbo Beaver took jet fuel, any aircraft with a turbo should take jet fuel. I explained to him the difference between a piston engine v. a turbine engine but I think I just confused him more. I a...

Re: Etiquette with gift to OJI upon checkout

mostly because it reunites people a few times a year and is usually a really good time. I wonder if that is a big difference between FSS and ATC. FSS are smaller units generally in smaller communities. Back in the pre-historic days, we worked and socialized with our co-workers a lot . Also, given t...

Re: Etiquette with gift to OJI upon checkout

What can I say, correctness and accuracy always matters. One of the things I always tried to point out to my trainees. You make an error, you raise your hand like a big boy, own up to it, learn from it, and try not to do it again. As for gifts, the OP seems to think there is a "standard" for giving ...

Re: Etiquette with gift to OJI upon checkout

There are tons of jobs where "no gift is expected or required". Still a great sentiment to do so and I'm sure will be appreciated by the recipient. Must be an ATC thing then because I ain't seen gifts to OJIs in any FSS unit I've worked at over my 35.5 years. Never. Maybe it's different in the last...

Re: flight following - q's and any tips?

My understanding is the machine that assigns the code is the one that puts the information into the ATC system, same as if you call them up without a code. So having a VFR flight plan doesn't mean ATC will know anything, it's having the code. A code can either be assigned by the ATC computer, or th...

Re: Contacting an MF/FSS

I haven't worked a RAAS since they took them out of the FICs, but way back, Centre used to pass the inbound info to us. Then for some reason it was decreed that they didn't have to so we stopped getting the inbounds. I always trusted that the powers that be in Ottawa knew what they were doing. :roll...

Re: flight following - q's and any tips?

ATC has your flight plan Actually if it's a VFR flight plan, they don't. Nobody even looks at a VFR flight plan until after your ETA. ATC does have the information that you provided on the radio when you first asked for flight following though, which might include your destination. I've been retire...

No gift required or expected. Shake his/her hand and remember how good of an OJI he/she was when you get your turn to be an OJI.

Re: IFR flight itinerary

Ya that would make a lot of sense actually Lloyd, I've heard a couple times when centre asked someone to call and cancel their ifr on the ground in cross because someone else is waiting for an approach. With an itin you would never call and nobody would be able to defend there till you take off aga...

Re: IFR flight itinerary

This is a good post, because I had the same confusion as the OP, and basically figured it out the same way everyone else does, by getting the "WTF is this guy talking about" voice from ATC, and then air filing a flight plan. One of those situations where what the rules clearly say is allowed, is no...

Re: IFR flight itinerary

As a retired FSS from a FIC, I would do whatever I could to give a pilot whatever he wanted and airfiles/FP mods are part of the job. Having said that, not every FSS/ATOS/ATC had the same attitude. The whole cancelling IFR in the air became a SNAFU when the boys in the short pants in Ottawa deemed t...

. Plant billions of trees now and continue to do so into the future. Plant 10 trees in your backyard and another 10 in your front yard. Can't go wrong planting trees. That number in a yard might not be realistic but even one is good. “Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they kn...

Re: Wasaya caravan missing

Over the years I've often included a cautionary warning when briefing pilots flying in lower stratusy conditions. Quite often there is some freezing precip hanging just below the cloud deck that is not reported on any METAR or in the forecasts. The only reason I've learned of this stuff is because p...

Re: Crash @ North Spirit Lake Ont (4 dead, 1 survivor)

I'm not a pilot so my opinion is based solely on gut feeling and intuition. I always give the benefit of the doubt to the pilots. Always. When I look at aircraft accidents I always try to figure out if something or somethings somehow let the pilots down or led them astray. Whether it be the aircraft...
