Re: Pearson Climb Gradients
Canadian military operators are supposed to use the US DOD FLIP anytime operating outside of Canada (although many use Jeppesen quasi-illegally.) There is a hierarchy of procedures we use. DODs can always be used, since all the procedures are reviewed to a standard we consider safe (and modified, i...

Re: Theoretical discussion - Clearance void if not airborne...
We once had a crew get violated because the time expired during their takeoff roll. The answer to your question is you could very well be violated, and you shouldn’t be taking off in the first place. It’s based on wheels up time, not V1, so if you only have seconds left, don’t take off, and get an e...

Re: CanForce to China with the PM
On longer flights like that they have to stop for gas on the way. If the flight is longer than a single crew can do in a crew day, they would have a slip crew prepositioned at the fuel stop too. Flying from YVR to China, my best guess would be a stop for gas in Alaska. The Polaris cannot refuel in f...

Re: Deviate around thunderstorm?
There are plenty of ways to do it, request vectors, request a heading, request X miles left or right of course (useful oceanic), or simply request a deviation in a direction. I've never been denied in North America or Europe, but I have been denied once for thunderstorm avoidance while in busy termi...

There are other leased aircraft flown by CF crews that don't/didn't show up on the page too, like the MEUF King Airs in Trenton, or the CH-178s we were flying in Afghanistan.

Re: RCAF Fleet
The whole thing of who owns what is a bit convoluted, but the CF website is inconsistent in the way they display it. At Allied Wings (KF Aerospace), the aircraft are all owned by the contractor and carry civilian registrations. They are flown by both military and civilian instructors to teach milita...

To expand on what Auxbat said, theater callsign are not generally something to be posted on a public forum, but I can tell you that Moose isn't our C-17s.

See if you can get a current copy of the AP/2, it's our go-to resource for flying into/over random countries all over world. Here is an old copy I found online to give you an idea what type of info it gives you. http://www.vusaf.us/OBF14/maps/ap2.pdf The hardest part is the accents and the sometimes...

Re: What are civilian jobs in the military like?
It's a bit unclear what you are asking about. Civilian positions at DND are not easy to come by, and most are things like admin or support staff. Some aircraft maintenance is done by contractors, but they work for their company, not the military.
What kind of job are you asking about?

Re: Military pilot application window?
It's not a 5+7 thing, when you join you sign an initial contract. The length of these vary, but for pilots they are usually 9 or 12 years, these days they also make you sign for 7 years after wings. When you can get out is the end of your initial contract or 7 years after wings (or any other obligat...

Plus, no air force in North America, in fact very few in the world, fly 767s, and certainly none fly scheduled daily routes over Northern Ontario. What you are seeing is civilian airliners.

Do you mind posting a picture of 3 O'clock Charlie? More than likely it's just an airliner, what makes you think it is military? Flightaware shows a few flights that fly over that area around that time each day, here are a couple examples. http://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAR235 http://flightaware...

And in this case, it actually cost 0$ to the taxpayers. Nonsense. Agreed that there's no direct cost to us, but Bombardier doesn't supply the aircraft for free. Yes, they are insured, but insurance companies are in business to make money - lots of it, so they won't be giving away a replacement airc...

Re: Harvard II ejection Moosejaw, Jan 24/14
Question for the RCAF guys here: I assume you have some sort of dispatch (maybe it has a cooler military name) in near constant contact with all RCAF aircraft in the area. Let's say all of a sudden their radio comes to life with, "Hey dudes, we got a problem here. Might have to eject." What happens...

I know quite a few guys who put their military time in a civi logbook (never the other way around), but I'm with the Colonel, I just take a photo of each completed page in my military logbook. As for the sim time, the Harvard FTDs are not certified (and they really suck) but the sims you will use on...

During your flight training you will do a number of tests and written exams throughout the courses. It is kind of like university in that there are a series of subject, both theory and flying, but unlike university in that you must pass every test in order to complete the course. Failing multiple te...

you will likely fly aircraft that many civilian pilots would give their 20 inch AvCanada schlong for, and even pay money to go for a novelty trip in- but for you that would be your daily gig. I agree big time with this. Even during training, you will be flying aircraft that many people only dream o...

Re: Any info on RCAF would be appreciated
Military flight training is different from civilian flight training; the learning curve is very steep, and there is less room for error. The way it works during flight training is if you fail a flying test, you get a review flight and a retest. If you pass the retest, you carry on. If you fail the r...

I could complain all day about stuff, as could any pilot (military or civilian), but in the end it is a great job and I do amazing things I would never be able to do otherwise. Be warned though, if you join to build hours, or as a shortcut to the airlines, you will be disappointed. The biggest gripe...

Yes, one of the big reasons why CEOTP pilot is in decline is because quite a few guys could not or did not finish their degrees in the allotted time. You don't get selected until you are finished phase II, Well yes that's a given, but if there is a shortage of pilots for lets say fighters, they won'...
