Somehow this thread has come back from the dead.
I'm pleased to announce I found an awesome instructor at BFC and have finished the instruction portion of the NR.
Just gotta do a few more solo hours...sigh.
Thanks

Re: Partial engine failure in jump plane
You're rather missing the point. What this pilot did was very skilled - did you hear the stall warning honking during the turn? I think the more experienced pilots on this forum are missing the point. When a low-time pilot asks a basic question, it would be great if they weren't made to feel like t...

Re: Partial engine failure in jump plane
As a new pilot, I want to make sure I understand this incident in the proper context. So, in this particular situation, in taking off from a large flat field, a return to the airfield is a reasonable course of action. However, if he had departed a runway, then not a reasonable course of action ? I j...

I'm looking for a flight instructor ~ Brampton Flight Centre
Perhaps a bit of a long shot but I thought I'd ask.
I am just looking to earn my night rating and was wondering if anyone here has some instructor recommendations for me. My PPL instructor unfortunately is leaving the biz.
Feel free to send me a PM.
Thanks.

That is a very cool pic...not only of the airport, but of Wonderland.
Thanks for that.
Now that I've had a taste, I want to see more.

Ok, 16500. Can't read obviously . Whats the service ceiling of this 172? Ok. Have a good one, hope you don't end up in the other section of this forum. Legal doesn't mean smart. Should be engraved in every hanger. What's freaking me out is the fuel guage in the last pic. Above a sea of clouds and j...

Re: SHould I bother getting my OTT rating ?
I'm not sure an IR is really safe for a weekend pilot. What we really need is a 2-class instrument rating, but I don't see that happening here any time soon. Not that I'm in a hurry to spend the money, but how is it that an IR is not safe for a weekend pilot ? Is it the false sense of safety that i...

Re: pilot cheat sheet?
Congrats on the PPL. I too, just got my PPL in the spring at the young age of 46. I'm sure that makes some of the experienced pilots here a little nervous. Although I enjoy flying, most of the time I wonder "What the Hell am I doing?" For me it was just something I wanted to challenge myself...

Oh great....I was wondering whether I should spend another $3K on an OTT and now I'm spending $8K on an IR.

Re: SHould I bother getting my OTT rating ?
Thanks Shiny. That does clear it up a little for me. I am pretty wary of even contemplating a trip in weather that is less than perfect...even though I have been told that going beyond one's comfort zone is essential to becoming a better pilot. That said, I was only thinking of OTT as a novelty ~ th...

Re: SHould I bother getting my OTT rating ?
Generally I'll also tailor it to their own specific equipment since most rental places don't let their airplanes out into VFR OTT trips. I'll very likely be a renter for the rest of my days. Are you saying that, in my case, the OTT will likely just be an emergency fall-back and not something I woul...

SHould I bother getting my OTT rating ?
Newbie PPL...just got it this spring. Presently taking my night rating. Expect to be a weekend warrior for the rest of my life ( 46 now ! ). Any significant advantage to getting my OTT rating ? Although every rating potentially improves your skill level, should I consider any further ratings a waste...

Re: Attitudes that lead to accidents
As a newly licensed PPL who depends upon the availablility of planes for rental, I fully understand and appreciate the need for a billable hours policy of some kind. Can't count the number of times the online reservation system shows that no planes are available yet when I show up at the airport, ha...

Re: RCMP order plane flying anti-Harper message to land
Unless I'm missing something, I'd say the biggest issue here is that the message isn't even anti-Harper. It's self-victimization with a twist of grand-standing to be sure, but it's not "anti" anything. Certainly not a personal attack, IMO. Much care was probably taken to use wording that would not b...

Re: Side Slip, or Slipping
I guess the point I am trying to make is that if your airspeed is too high, slipping alone might not be enough. First get your airspeed, then worry about how you will lose your altitude (power, flaps, slipping, etc). I can see the merit of this, but for those occasions where there is not enough tim...

Re: Side Slip, or Slipping
I'm glad this thread has been started since it gives me the chance to chime in with a question or two. 1) The colonel stated that he isn't impressed when students attempt to lose speed on final by raising the nose. I am on my second read-through of "stick and rudder" and the author does suggest that...

Comment : Some mention too much speed. Question : Why were you considering, "nursing it in with power."? I'm thinking the two options are, Go around. or Ease the throttle closed and bring the nose up to get rid of the excess speed. By the second bounce, I don't think speed was an issue as much as t...

Re: Question : Why did I bounce my landings today ?
The pyschological possiblities sound interesting, and could very well have played a factor. The thing is, although I was tired, I have been more tired. ALthough it was a warm day, I have flown in warmer. Coffee ? Oh yeah. Just came from breakfast at Hanover. As I walked in from the ramp, I spoke wit...

Re: Bank Angle In The Circuit
Personally, I was taught to keep bank angles no bigger than 30 degrees in the circuit, BUT was definitely never taught to hurry up a turn in the circuit with rudder. Ensuing conversations and my own musings concluded that the reasons for keeping bank angle on the 'lowish' side was not so much as to ...

Question : Why did I bounce my landings today ?
Since the more experienced flyers seem to love the chance to show off their prowess, I have a question about my landings today. Let me begin by telling you I am a low time PPL ( around 95 hours ). Although I rarely grease my landings, I have never had the pleasure of bouncing along the runway 3 or 4...

Re: Radio usage plea
Uncontrolled radio procedure...a pet peeve of mine. One of the worst is idiots that fly right by a busy uncontrolled airport, like within 2 or 3 miles, on a sunny weekend, without a radio call either on 126.70 or more importantly the ad freq., just above circuit height. legal? Sure. Smart? No way.....

Can you file VFR flight plans online and if so, how ?
Last time I filed a flight plan, the agent said something that made me believe I could be filing my flight plans online. Is this possible ? If so, how do you do it and do you close them online as well ?
Thanks

Re: Read Stick and Rudder. Still seeking clarification.
So it's not 100% true that a plan in flight does not feel the wind, because during a gust it takes the plane a few moments to succumb to the wind, so for a second or two, the plane is actually resisting ( so to speak ) the wind. So if the gust was a crosswind from the left, does it have any kind of ...

Read Stick and Rudder. Still seeking clarification.
On the advice of one or two people in this forum, I have just finished reading, Stick and Rudder . As promised, it has really helped clear up a number of things that I was having trouble fully comprehending. Not sure if it is just because the book is over 60 years old, but the language used by the a...

Is Wiarton a fun place to fly for dinner ?
My PPL still has that new car smell, and I'm looking for a few places in Southern Ontario that make for a fun trip. Flying out of Brampton. Does anyone recommend Wiarton ? How about Peterborough ? What looks tempting about Wiarton is the proximity of the town to the airport.
Thanks.
Thanks.
