Re: Waterloo Wellington FC Vs Harv's Air 4 Instructor Rating
You ought to call up both flight schools with your questions. I can't comment on Harvs but WWFC have some great instructors, friendly staff and a good fleet. Can't go wrong with them in my opinion.

Re: Porter's loss of slots at EWR
Porter said it was profitable for all those years prior to their failed IPO attempt which illustrated cumulative losses in excess of $40m. So, from a business perspective, the venture, imo, doesn't have much going for it. It's a great product though. I don't understand why it doesn't though. They h...

Re: Cost of Living vs. Wages
This is a tough question... The increases are in part due to supply...the US has experienced two severe droughts for two years in a row. That has an impact on food prices. I'm not well versed in agriculture but haven't prices been rising steadily over the past decade? Oil is a good example of this a...

Re: Cost of RPP -> PPL
In my opinion the RPP is essentially useless, just go straight to a PPL. And it will be cheaper too. Written tests are $120, most PE's charge minimum $300 for a flight test. eh, what? Can you elaborate on that? The RPP costs 75% of the PPL (generally - it can probably be obtained for less), enables...

Re: Do you still enjoy aviation?
I quit flying commercially in 2009. I miss it huge except on paydays, early in the morning, and vacation time. I still kick around in an amphib Caravan now and then for a local oil mogul which is fun but optional. But mostly now when I fly, I do it for fun. Waaay better. I'm zipping out to T...

http://www.tsb.gc.ca/eng/medias-media/communiques/aviation/2012/a11p0027-20120911.asp .....but it's cool to send up a bunch of flight school airplanes full of people that have never flown before, without the slightest training.... What? So now only people with PPL's are allowed to fly in light airc...

Apparently some models have 3 seatbelts in the back and are designed for 5 people

Re: 4 fatal - crash nw of Waterloo ON Aug 24 2012
Could fuel loss have been a factor here? A C172 with 4 passengers would've had maybe half a tank of fuel. A return trip from Niagara comes to around 140nm, and with a full load they would've been on at least 3/4 power... That's just a random thought. A lot of the discussion here makes more sense now...

Re: Tell us about YOUR flight training...
I started late - at ~39. Out of boredom of my main (IT) work. Never had a dream or inclination to go flying before. Now loving it. Based on the CS's statement I'm hopeless, but I'm still having fun :) I bet more so than a 10-year kid who does't overthink it. It took me long, a couple of years at le...

Re: 4 fatal - crash nw of Waterloo ON Aug 24 2012
Ivan42...although I agree with some of your statement, I do not find it "mental" for the pilot to think he could pull this off...nor to think that an intentional spin COULD possibly be part of this equation. You do not have to be "mental" to try something outside the envelope. If that were the case...

Re: 4 fatal - crash nw of Waterloo ON Aug 24 2012
This sounds very much like a 'fuel' issue. Sad, sadder still if it was indeed preventable. Can you please clarify 'fuel' issue? Also, I understand people wanting to draw conclusions based on what has been reported through the media, and how everyone is commenting on spin training, and how you shoul...

Re: 4 fatal - crash nw of Waterloo ON Aug 24 2012
What possesses people to do spins with passengers anyway? I didn't want to believe that this was an "avoidable incident" as some others said earlier; however, reading the two posts above makes me feel a bit doubtful. Still, the news reports seem to indicate that the spin they were in was unintention...

Re: 4 fatal - crash nw of Waterloo ON Aug 24 2012
I read earlier that the aircraft was found fairly intact - that pic looks anything but. How fast would it have been going for it to crumple up so badly? And if it was going fast, couldn't they have made a relatively safe landing in the field? Something must've given with the wings or the engine I cu...

Re: Flight Training around the GTA
I'd love to get this thread back on topic. I just signed up for training with Toronto Airways in Buttonville. It was between them and Burlington, being about an equal distance away from my residence. How do they compare? I've only attended a few ground school classes so far so I would like to deter...

Looks like a short landing contest? I hope he won. right up to the point when he tried to put both feet through the firewall I thought that at first too, but did his mains sink into the grass when he slowed down? Hard to tell from the video. How does that happen though? He seemed a bit fast but the...

Re: Flight Training around the GTA
I agree with the post above. I'm training out of the city airport (so that narrows down the school I'm with ;) ) I really like my instructor for very many reasons but if I'd have had a choice I'm not sure that I would have picked the school I'm currently with. But living in downtown Toronto without...

So the sky didn't fall after all! Sure there have been concessions, but times are changing in ALL industries and we must adapt. Re: Actual training cost
I was talking to a low-time pilot yesterday, and he asked me if he should fly with somewhat distant instructor "X" on aircraft "Y". My answer was Hell yes! A low-time pilot needs to fly with as many different instructors on as many different aircraft types as he possibly can. Each different instruc...

I've been inquiring along the same lines and based on what I've currently heard, it's largely a function of your dedication/aptitude and your instructor. Guys I've talked to who've done training on a regular basis - i.e. 3 to 5 times a week consistently over the course of the program - tend to finis...

Thanks for the link - it was a great albeit harrowing read William Langewiesche is an excellent writer. He has written a lot of flying related articles, but his other writings are excellent too. Re: Flight Training around the GTA
There's a lot being said here but I guess, the basic point may be that a standard PPL license training in a C172 may be insufficient for crafting a well-rounded, air-worthy pilot, on average? Like everything else, and as you said, pilots come in all flavours. Some could fly the hell out of that plan...

Re: Flight Training around the GTA
Given the choices, as long as you're less than 6'3", go for the DA20... its just more fun than the Cessnas, and if you want to transition to a Cessna in the future, it should be easy! (and if you're more than about 220lbs, I would steer clear of both, at least as long as you have to share the cockp...
