Re: CANPASS
We arrived in YEG the other day, called in, and were told that an officer was coming to meet us this time. We duly shut down and waited in the aircraft for 20 minutes before calling back to ask what the hold up was. After holding for a while we were told that the officers changed their minds, were g...

Re: International procedure training course
I did a Scott IPC course a few years back. Don’t recall the price but we had to travel to the course site. I bet now it’s all done remotely.
Re: CANPASS
I asked a couple of times, and was told that it was just that I was calling at peak hours, but that didn’t matter before. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was some kind of work-to-rule thing, or staffing issues.
Re: CANPASS
After a couple of these experiences (1 hour holding on the aircraft sat phone), and asking an officer what the deal was with the hold times, I was told to use option 3 on the menu. This skips the holding que and gets you on with an officer right away. I was told it’s only for checking in on landing,...

Re: Vaccine Madate/Private Operators
It’s not the cross border travel I’m referring to, it’s the upcoming Canadian vaccine mandates. I agree, most corporate pilots fly commercial at least occasionally so even if private operators happened to be declared exempt, the crew would need to be vaccinated anyway. I’m interested to see how the ...

Vaccine Madate/Private Operators
I’ve been trying to ascertain, out of curiosity, whether the new mandate will apply to private operators,i.e. whether professional crew of private aircraft will need to be fully vaccinated. I’ve noticed the use of the term ‘air carrier’ used in some media and that has me wondering. Of course if you ...

Re: Multi-Engine Seaplane Rating
I converted my Canadian ATPL (SMELS) to an FAA ATPL about 7 years ago. They would not put multi engine seaplane on my FAA license. I had a seaplane rating and plenty of Twin Otter float time.

Re: Life Insurance
My wife and I use Professional Pilot Insurance Plan. A friend recommended it and I did my own research. Seems legit. Much more pilot friendly. A friend of a friend actually had to use it and had no problems, supposedly. I believe you need an ATPL and a medical at the time of application.

Re: Returning From the US
Thank you for the replies. CBSA seems to agree; getting on an airliner to get home doesn't mess with the exemption. That makes life much easier! Now that we've started checking around it seems that people are travelling in an out of the US with less hassle than I expected.

Interesting. We assumed that once you got on an airliner that you were just like everybody else.

Re: Returning From the US
By deadheading, do you mean flying the aircraft home empty or airlining home? Flying home empty would definitely be the preferred option.

Returning From the US
Greetings, My flight department hasn't left Canada since Covid thing started, but that is about to change. I understand that as pilots we are exempt from the quarantine rules, but has anyone here spent time in the US before returning? For example, flying the boss to LA, staying there for a week+ (po...

Re: The kind of accident EMAS is designed to prevent
This happened a while back, but if I remember correctly, the anti-skid was inop on this aircraft. Given the lack of qualifications with this crew, if they landed long and fast they would've stood on the brakes and they would've locked up on them, hence the smoke in the video. From my limited convers...

If you happen to hold an ATPL and a class one medical, Professional Pilot Insurance Plan might cover you. Not sure if it covers recreational flying though.

Re: Question for Caravan Pilots
Definitely not from the prop, Schnitzel. Thank for the input; of all the stuff out there about Caravans and icing, I'd never come across this one, so I was curious. Just putting it out on Avcanada for the heck of it.

'Lots of great free resources online'
I did look around a bit for mention of buffeting in Caravan's and such, with no luck, aside from the TSB reports of past Caravan accidents that I'd already seen.

Re: Question for Caravan Pilots
I'm familiar with the Caravan's limitations, and I am quire happy with my current employment situation thanks. We take good care of the boots, and on this particular flight elevator trim was not an issue. Like I said, if you've had a similar experience to the one I described I'd be interested in hea...

Question for Caravan Pilots
Greetings, I have a question for the Caravan pilots out there regarding an icing encounter I had recently. Since I don't know many Caravan pilots, I thought I'd roll the dice and put it on Avcanada! My hope is that someone will see this that has had a similar experience, and maybe even shed light on...

Re: Beware of Synthetic Vision Systems
I've noticed that doing a go-around from minimums (ILS so you are fairly low), the runway depicted on the SVS goes by 'underneath' you, which on the display was down, which was quite disorienting, and added to the mental pull of acceleration error. After experiencing it several times in a controlled...
