Re: Ferry piston aircrafts across Canada
Lots of my earlier flying was transcontinental VFR single engined ferries, and it went fine. But, I had a good mentor, and never any pressure to make it in a certain time. Certainly today's aids to navigation make it a lot easier then in my pre GPS days, using nothing other than paper charts. If the...

Re: Unusual Event
Absolutely! An emergency alert is only effective if it's not being abused. What do you expect, that I will go drive around in my car in the middle of the night and go look for a grey 2008 F150 driving around 300 miles from where I live? Piss people off with irrelevant alerts, and they won't pay att...

Re: Unusual Event
I am so opposed to the apparent reality that the amber alerts cannot be disabled by the owner of the phone! I nearly had a T bone car accident (which would have been my fault) because I was distracted by an Amber alert tone at the wrong moment at t stop sign! I would eagerly support a community effo...

Re: Aircraft Registration Process on Import
As has been said, the airplane has to be registered in Canada (to get a C registration, without which flight is not permitted at all). With a C reg, you can apply for a flight permit to ferry it into Canada. Then you need an MDM Delegate to do the import paperwork. An MDM can start this process for ...

Re: Is FAA AC23-27 usable/valid in Canada?
A Canadian aircraft is required to comply with the CAR's. Though FAA AC's can provide useful background, compliance with the CARs is required. CAR's Standard 571.06, and in particular paragraph (5) states the Canadian equivalent of the FAA AC you have identified. Standard 571, Appendix A provides gu...

Yeah, how about no rocks at all. This is sad, and we have lost two of our colleagues, and their passengers, with someone really hurting...throwing rocks at people who are hurting.

Re: Which Beaver is Better
Any amphibious floatplane is a compromise. The negatives usually outweigh the benefits for any commercial operation where payload and operating cost are considerations. With amphibs, useful load will be reduced, complexity and maintenance cost increased, and insurance greatly increased. Benefits of ...

Re: Is buying a plane to build enough hours a thing in Canada
Don't knock an "extra" couple of hundred hours of piloting experience in very simple airplanes. Two things will come from that experience: You'll have either encountered, or carefully with wisdom, avoided, some difficult learning events. Either way, you learned something, which probably would have p...

Re: Is buying a plane to build enough hours a thing in Canada
If you're rich, can you just pay to fly until you have enough hours for a good job? Would that be looked down upon by employers? I have never been rich. In 1987, I used all of my money to buy a decent 150. I flew it happily all over the continent for over 3500 hours, until I lost it in a hangar fir...

Re: Ferry permit
Ferry (and other flight) permits are issued to allow specific purpose flights only, for purposes, or in conditions which otherwise would not be permitted. The compromise being that TC will insist on minimizing any other risk. So, for ferrying a GA plane, it'll be day VFR ('cause there is no reason t...

Re: Logging hours outside of Canada
You must be PIC to log the hours. You must have an appropriate license to be PIC. Generally, you must have a license issued by the nation of registry of the airplane if you are flying it in their airspace.

Ahh, I remember the Wongs! It's not the same at the Island anymore, indeed, you would not recognize it. General aviation still happens there, but nothing like it used to be!
I think back to a nice day I spent at Ardmore, which I'm sure still bustles with GA, much more so than the Island!

Re: Is Buttonville Holding a Farewell Event?
A memory about Buttonville.... In the 80's, a fellow kept his 182 at our private strip at Pottageville. He was an older pilot, and our group kinda kept an eye out for him, as though he was very nice, his flying skills were not ideal. He generally stayed safe by avoiding difficult situations. My home...

Re: Is Buttonville Holding a Farewell Event?
This article says they are starting to tear up some of the runways this week but there are still aircraft there? When I discussed this last week with a service provider at Buttonville, the answer was that it took time (two weeks or so) between "closing" the airport (in the certified airport sense) ...

It’s doubtfull that it’s legal or practical to have your own spare fuel can up there in case of a slight homebase burn rate undercalculation, Indeed... dangerous goods on a pax flight!?! This.Apply carb heat to always keep the needle outside of the yellow arc.
And, after applying carb heat, re lean the engine. This may change the effect of the carb heat a little too, which is a good thing.

Re: Is Buttonville Holding a Farewell Event?
Well... From my asking around... apparently not. I was speaking with an AMO client there today. The word is that as of the 15th of this month, the airport is no longer certified as such, and between the 15th and the 30th, the airport will be being decommissioned as an airport. After the 30th, zero o...

Re: Owner maintenance
A permit is not the same as a license, Agreed. The wording of the OM Transfer Document leads to a fuzzy understanding of how "permit" should be interpreted between airplane and helicopter: 8. OWNER MAINTENANCE TASK CHECKLIST BY AIRCRAFT OWNER (APPENDIX C) 8.1 Upon completion of the authorization an...
