Re: Journeyman AME
Short answer is that it is a very small industry that crosses a lot of provincial borders so it would add a lot of expensive bureaucracy to aviation. No advantage for anyone that I can see. The point of the red seal program was to allow trades to easily move and work in other provinces which we can ...

Re: Is it just my company?
It happens everywhere unless you are willing to establish personal boundaries for how you are treated. Even in union shops there will be managers that are happy to let employees burn themselves out, work in unsafe conditions, sacrifice their personal lives if you happen to have a strong work ethic. ...

Re: Future AME
If you want an airline job the co-op program between various colleges and Air Canada is an easy path. Basically you alternate between apprenticeship at AC and your schooling to end up almost licensed. Places like BCIT, Confederation and I'm sure others offer this option. The biggest challenge is not...

Maybe JerryRig would be qualified to answer if mental illness or a psychosis can be spread through social contact resulting in dangerous situations like a lynch mob or cults etc. If so, do the moderators have a social obligation to protect people from dangerous suggestions that could cause otherwise...

Re: Air Canada Maintenance Interview
Yeah there are some people that can take all night on a tire change or gear lube and then just disappear. They also tend to be given the more mindless jobs because there is less they can screw up. In my experience though if you are interested in troubleshooting/ground runs etc and show some motivati...

Re: Air Canada Maintenance Interview
Hey Pat, By volunteering I mean that in a unionized environment there are often assigned tasks for the shift, and those can sometimes be competed very quickly leaving a lot of extra time where you have no responsibilities. Some people prefer to chat, play on their phone, etc but if someone was motiv...

Re: Air Canada Maintenance Interview
They are hiring a lot of people these days and most of the interview questions will be very generic HR stuff. There will probably be a question or two to see what you know about the company, a few questions about how you deal with conflict, how you deal with making mistakes, how you respond when the...

Re: Line Maintenance Log Book Sing off Amount
It's not an exact number but rather a percentage of the eligible tasks. Unless you can show that a section isn't applicable because of the scope of your work then it will be included in the overall count and raise the total number required to reach the required percentage, I think it's still 70%. Wh...

Re: Westjet mechs unionizing
We all know the government won't allow a strike and you end up being given whatever an arbitrator decides is the 'industry' standard. Which is code for maintain the status quo at best and allow the company to dictate the industry standard at worst.

Re: Westjet mechs unionizing
I guess that is always the case when people stand up for the rights of themselves and their friends. Often it can be a positive experience to find out that you aren't alone and that other people have your back and vice versa. Personally I'd rather be part of a group fight than be threatened with une...

Re: Westjet mechs unionizing
AC AME's are also trying to do the same thing currently and I wouldn't be surprised if other places follow suit. I think in general we would benefit from having a national trade union that advocates for us and gives employees at smaller outfits the power to negotiate for better wages. We get picked ...

Card drive was completed and they are now applying for status with the CIRB. Then if approved they have an official vote.

I guess it's only a matter of time until AI bots start posting on forums and learning from the responses as a way to train them.

Re: Flying to US with Nexus card only
https://travel.gc.ca/air/identification-requirements says that you should be able to use your Nexus card but this US site says that it is only valid for air travel if used as at a Canadian per-clearence locations ( https://www.cbp.gov/travel/trusted-traveler-programs/nexus/card ) so maybe it depends...

Re: Flying to US with Nexus card only
Nexus cards require a valid passport. If your current passport is expired and you haven't logged into Nexus to update it with a new one I'm not sure it is considered a valid travel document. Your question is probably more for US customs, but to answer your question any airline will ask you to provid...

Re: Is it really all that bad?
I enjoy my job as an AME. I've worked in the industry for almost 20 years with 5 different employers. Here is my experience. Less than half my graduating class ended up in aviation due to the struggle to find your first apprenticeship job at that time. I applied everywhere and maybe 4 months later f...

Re: The Career of an AME
In the past the government has made it clear that airline travel is considered an essential service and without the threat of strike action the large unions and employee groups don't have any negotiating power. It always go to arbitration and typically they will award inflation increases but that's ...

Re: AME M after E?
You can use an online training program like ICS to meet the training requirements and prepare for the technical exams. The biggest obstacle is just getting the logbook filled out for all the M category tasks so look for an avionics job where you can help out with other work to meet those requirement...
