Re: Kenn Borek Antarctic Cause/Speculation Thread
I don't know what this plane had in it for EGPWS but the upcoming regs which should have happened a long time ago are going to call for class A TAWS (704). Which means a screen with view of the rocks and avoidance instructions from the computer. "Turn left" etc. I've seen big terrain mapping screen...

Re: Plane missing in Antarctica
From Antarctica New Zealand's Website: Officials with the U.S. Antarctic Program and Antarctica New Zealand have jointly decided to recall search-and-rescue teams from the site of an Antarctic aircraft crash after examination of the plane indicated that it would be unsafe at this point to further di...

Re: Kenn Borek Antarctic Cause/Speculation Thread
If you are a PPL and encounter cloud, get the hell out. TC has a great article entitled 178 Seconds to Live. Google it and take it to heart as it could save you life and your friends. Fly safe! GK Watched it several times and understood it even better yesterday during my encounter. How hard is it t...

Re: Kenn Borek Antarctic Cause/Speculation Thread
I assume there are no IFR services in Antarctica, so if they were flying VFR, did they get trapped in IMC conditions or were they still in VMC? Excuse my lack of experience as I am a new pilot, but if I am VFR and I start loosing visibility and ground reference, I get out of there. Does this logic m...

Re: Kenn Borek Antarctic Cause/Speculation Thread
With all the technology surrounding us, it's about time something VERY ACCURATE is developed that has every single cliff/mountain/hedge on this earth mapped out and documented so that accidents like these are mitigated. Just think of how TCAS changed aviation and try and imagine something as robust ...

Re: RV9 Engine failure & forced landing CYKF, Jan 24
Glad no one is hurt.
"I'll put it on the apron if I have to" my instructor replied when I asked him the first time what to do during an engine failure on departure.

Re: Plane missing in Antarctica
Does anyone know the actual Lat and long? The reports all say "the north end of the Queen Alexandra Range at an altitude of 13,000 feet" but from what I can see the high terrain is at the South end of Queen Alexandra Range. Lat and Long can be found here: http://avherald.com/h?article=45cad699&opt=0

Re: Plane missing in Antarctica
Been reading the forum for long time, but registered now to add my prayers to yours fellas. Going through my private pilot license now and boy oh boy I will inspect that ELT more meticulously now. Let's hope for the best. I can imagine the boys sitting in that Twin Otter, covered in coats, sipping t...
