Re: Swoop alum
If you live in a van, you have lost the game of life! You can’t spin it into a positive. To be fair, if you have wanderlust, desire to travel a lot and dont care about a fixed address and are happy...who says you've lost? Now living in an abandoned van on blocks, now that's failing life. Then again...

Re: Use the Autofeather
4 bladed King Airs have a modified definition of VMC - dead engine feathered, not windmilling. I assume the same for other types with 4 blades.

Re: Traning bond or ... non flying job
Take the job if its one you see yourself doing for a year or so. you're not going to get called back soon anyway, and companies resume piles will just keep getting bigger with higher time pilots. As for training bonds, if an employer tries to sneak one in on you during recurrent ask for an education...

The calm before the storm...For myself Im enjoying the most time off since high school. I'm hopeful for a continuation of MOA2, but I'm not sure thats realistic. I expect as the leaves start to turn these forums will be busy again.

Re: Travel starting to come back?
Not much to see here. Sunwing is selling packages until there’s enough demand to fire up their own planes. This was the plan from the beginning. I can guarantee the full AC flights weren’t full of WG pax. And thank you to AC for flying peeps down to our hotels. Get some revenue going. WG is still t...

Sonic, I hope for your case (and other WJers ) you're wrong on a few points.
I truly hope that someone from onex is monitoring this thread and takes this to heart - what made Westjet Westjet was the people, not cheap labour.

Re: Will Westjet survive?
Management did their best to paint the pilots as the devil during negotiations and pit the rest of the employees against them. I think what we have here is an example of the brainwashing having its intended effect. Management didn't try to paint pilots as the devil, ya'll did that when you lined th...

Re: Will Westjet survive?
We only pretend to care. People can get on social media and declare they are never flying (insert airline name here) again, but we know that most of them will.... They have limited options. Someone has figured out that the money saved with this move exceeds the money lost as a result of out sourcin...

Re: When do you think flying will be back to february 2020 level
IMHO, 3- 4 years for major recovery but it will never again be as big as it was 3 months ago. I say this as covid 19 is rewriting the global economic playbook. Online meetings are really going to chip into the business segment. That's a huge revenue stream for AC and Westjet, and both companies will...

Re: In need of a 9/11 history lesson
I was flying a king air in 9/11 in the newly formed air canada regional hiring pool. I didn’t go to jazz till 2006. Now here I am a 6th year cpt at WestJet looking at a lay-off. I agree this downturn will make 9/11 look like a summer picnic. I’m just trying to anticipate the next move I should make ...

Re: Will Westjet survive?
Well, we have a solid bank account, lots of owned AC to sell, and deep pockets own us. I’d say we’ll survive but in what form and size remains the question.

In need of a 9/11 history lesson
Hey all got a question for the long time porters here who were effected from 9/11. How fast and how deep did the layoffs happen at AC back then? I’m looking for context from those that rode out the last big crash, as I was not in the airline industry until it’s recovery.
Cheers

Re: WestJet Group Hiring Freeze
As covid 19 really starts to show us how unprepared we are and that we didn't take it seriously, I think we're looking at a near total shutdown of air travel for a month or so. I know Jack shit, I know how to fly. I see a monster of a storm coming, one we haven't seen this big before. It's going to ...

Re: Who's gotten a lay off?
Any young pilots on here, go get a northern job now. I rode out the 911 crash with ease flying king airs. the north will not suffer like the rest of the country - medivac, sched service into the reserves will go on. grab a turbo prop job and honestly enjoy some actual fun flying.

Re: Who's gotten a lay off?
We can now kiss that pilot shortage goodbye. For now yes, but not gone forever unless the global economy never recovers...which it will. Having been through the late 90s, 9/11, and 2008 I can say there will always be jobs. for some this will come as a real eye opener for what they thought they knew...

Re: 30 Day suspension-- all Travel Europe to US.
How long until layoffs begin? Travel industry is getting destroyed in the markets. Time to get serious imo. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. It seems like this thing hasn't been bad in Canada yet and there isnt much panic, and maybe it wont be bad at all. Or more likely we are in for a rea...

Re: Grab a seat. The music is stopping
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, good saying, applies today. Sure this is blown up BUT its still going to suck. Aviation is the first to get hit, and the last to recover. People are panicked, this WILL have an impact on us for the foreseeable future. How bad it gets? who knows, but t...

I have heard Borek is a very different company now a days. 3 week rotations in YEV, few hours to be had, and the money is no better now then when I was there 14 years ago. God time flies. Anyway, I hope what I'm hearing is wrong and its still a great place to work.

Re: 2020 Hiring
The upgrade times peaked at 9.5 years and are back down to 7.5 years or so I'm hearing from recent upgrades. Going forward who knows, too many variables (economy, Onex, retirements, Delta JV). I think some on here need to focus more on lifestyle. Im hearing from junior pilots here they are not apply...
