Re: In need of a 9/11 history lesson

I was flying a king air in 9/11 in the newly formed air canada regional hiring pool. I didn’t go to jazz till 2006. Now here I am a 6th year cpt at WestJet looking at a lay-off. I agree this downturn will make 9/11 look like a summer picnic. I’m just trying to anticipate the next move I should make ...

Re: Will Westjet survive?

Well, we have a solid bank account, lots of owned AC to sell, and deep pockets own us. I’d say we’ll survive but in what form and size remains the question.

In need of a 9/11 history lesson

Hey all got a question for the long time porters here who were effected from 9/11. How fast and how deep did the layoffs happen at AC back then? I’m looking for context from those that rode out the last big crash, as I was not in the airline industry until it’s recovery.

Cheers

Re: WestJet Group Hiring Freeze

As covid 19 really starts to show us how unprepared we are and that we didn't take it seriously, I think we're looking at a near total shutdown of air travel for a month or so. I know Jack shit, I know how to fly. I see a monster of a storm coming, one we haven't seen this big before. It's going to ...

Re: Who's gotten a lay off?

Any young pilots on here, go get a northern job now. I rode out the 911 crash with ease flying king airs. the north will not suffer like the rest of the country - medivac, sched service into the reserves will go on. grab a turbo prop job and honestly enjoy some actual fun flying.

Re: Who's gotten a lay off?

We can now kiss that pilot shortage goodbye. For now yes, but not gone forever unless the global economy never recovers...which it will. Having been through the late 90s, 9/11, and 2008 I can say there will always be jobs. for some this will come as a real eye opener for what they thought they knew...

Re: 30 Day suspension-- all Travel Europe to US.

How long until layoffs begin? Travel industry is getting destroyed in the markets. Time to get serious imo. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. It seems like this thing hasn't been bad in Canada yet and there isnt much panic, and maybe it wont be bad at all. Or more likely we are in for a rea...

Re: Grab a seat. The music is stopping

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, good saying, applies today. Sure this is blown up BUT its still going to suck. Aviation is the first to get hit, and the last to recover. People are panicked, this WILL have an impact on us for the foreseeable future. How bad it gets? who knows, but t...

I have heard Borek is a very different company now a days. 3 week rotations in YEV, few hours to be had, and the money is no better now then when I was there 14 years ago. God time flies. Anyway, I hope what I'm hearing is wrong and its still a great place to work.

Re: 2020 Hiring

The upgrade times peaked at 9.5 years and are back down to 7.5 years or so I'm hearing from recent upgrades. Going forward who knows, too many variables (economy, Onex, retirements, Delta JV). I think some on here need to focus more on lifestyle. Im hearing from junior pilots here they are not apply...

Re: Does Flica work

Yes it works, only if pilots are trading. Ive seen high credit single days go untaken, and I've seen lots of pairings snapped up rather quickly. Really depends on time of year and whats going on in peoples lives. Its works really well if you bid single days and want to either trade to make your sche...

Looks like he goes from captain position to captain positions... Looks like Captainitus to me... And never went to any major with all this experience. It's okay, he will Swoop his way to WestJet... but not before being bypassed by ALL Encore pilots. I have a feeling he might change company soon. Wh...

Re: Swoow in-person interview

Heres a sample question. You shoot the RNAV into yhm Reach mins with no contact: you either A - conduct a missed approach. B - select VS and dip till you see the runway. This of course is a joke (the interview question part) but answer B was told to me as an example of what goes on there. Of course ...

People need to understand that pretty much nobody at Swoop these days spent a single hour flying a WJ aircraft with WJ crews from WJ training/indoc. The results are night and day. Swoop is now just filled with low time people willing to slave themselves out and jump the queue or the loser cast-offs...

Re: What do you do when you think someone should never fly again?

Co-joe that sucks, and thats what a CP is supposed to do - filter out those that are ready vs those that aren't. Years ago I was in a similar situation where one of my FO's/ trainees was literally the worst Ive ever flown with, had a horrible attitude and was not receptive to critique. I was young (...

Re: OTS WesJet Mainline FO

I commuted for 7 years to YYC from YYZ, it wasn't too bad. With Onex about to take the helm all bets are off about getting a YYC base. Lets assume for a minute that there is no reduction in YYC, and there are 787's coming (faster then originally planned) you'll see moment in YYC again. How long who ...

Re: What do you do when you think someone should never fly again?

I recently worked with a copilot that was by far the most incompetent person I have ever had the misfortune of working with. Utterly terrible at flying, had no idea what they were doing, and despite having over 2200hrs in flight time, I think most of it was spent being told to sit down and don't to...

Shark, I dont think we'll be doing much wide body delta flying but maybe some lower yield transborder flying, and get some left overs. Some more flying, a equity stake and leadership is what I'm hopeful for.

I like making wagers, I'm usually wrong but it doesnt stop me :smt040 Anyway, Onex takes over anyday now, 3-6 months of feeling things out, then a managment cleaning. Meanwhile delta JV gets US approval, Delta personal appointed to BOD and upper WJ management within 6 months. Eventually onex sells 4...

How many pre-PPL students own their own plane and so can legally train with an independent instructor? Not many.
Now this was 20+ years ago but at 2 different schools I taught at we had freelance instructors. They pay for plane, it's a bonus draw for the school
